Not what I said. He earned his title. Meaning in the ring, on the actual night. Granted, maybe Zhong vs. Resendiz wasn't the best the WBC could've put together for the vacant title in the first place, but still - he took care of business and clearly beat the man that was put in front of him. :good I wasn't defending the politics of that situation, just saying when he was put in the position he didn't need controversial scorecards to claim the victory and its spoils, like Zou did in the Olympics. (arguably both times) ...plus, he did then beat Cuello, so...
Ik Yang is the pound for pound best prospect in China and might be the likeliest next to follow in Zhong's footsteps and claim a world championship. In fact, he might do it soon - and become their first ever undefeated champion. I think he is either already Lamont Peterson's mandatory or a single W away from becoming it. Zhilei and Dong are slow clumsy oafs; they'll do nothing @ heavy, even with the division in a weak state.
Yang is #2 I think behind Cuenca...would be a very unique bout if they ever fought (and it's possible if the IBF get bored of Peterson, which admittedly doesn't seem likely) Jun is #3 at 122 with the WBC Ming is top 10 ranked by the WBA, WBO and IBF @ 108 Xiang Jing is the WBO #15 guy @112
I can see Lamont getting stripped with this 143lb nonsense with Garcia, if he doesn't immediately make a mandatory defense after that. (Peterson vs. Yang would be a dream war; either versus Cuenca not so much :yep)
I didn't realize Jun was so high at super bantam. :think I guess technically he's beaten everyone he ever stepped in the ring with at this point, having avenged the early defeats to Baat. Plus this whole 7-0 (4) run that he's on for random WBC baubles does have some halfway decent names in there.
I'm not sold on Yang, even if it's against Lamont Peterson I'm not sure if it's a given he wins the title, in fact I'd probably even favour Lamont.
I think most still would, but for a guy that most people have probably never heard of (and even diehards hadn't until a year ago when he started popping up on Top Rank cards) he is probably in there with a much greater chance than he ought to be, with his experience level. Given his style, I'd think he was a very live dog, especially if Garcia first softens Peterson up substantially in that catch-weight farce.
Like this thread, if the Chinese had same% boxers vs population as Mexico. Would be be champs comin out the yin yang.
China missed out though, didn't implement a Russian or Cuban type program with their amateurs, kinda sad really.
To reply to your question if most Chinese fans can objectively critique Zou Shiming: no. lol. no, they can't. there is a lot of bias on the hype train. Ik Yang's fights are more often than not included somehow into the 3 hour time frame on Sundays. People are pretty biased with him as well, but Zou is still Chinese boxing's "big bro." I've noticed that the Chinese commentary is super biased toward the Chinese fighter (ofc) so I'm assuming that's why. CST80's threads are super awesomely good at introducing these dudes. My current fave is THE DONG!!! And IB and CST are my favorite posters on this site. :happy Thanks for the thread revival, btw. I was worried I had typed all that out for nothing. I was late to work because of it LOLOLOL #boxing4lyfe
For a time it looked like Macau was going to be a serious future venue, but with Xi Jinping's crackdown on corruption and illicit funds passing through the casinos there, that might change things.
Haha Tai Dong, funny how so many think chinese are all small people, correct me if I'm wrong 777, seems Chinese are larger further north you go.
:yep WBC has benn trying to crawl into the China market for a while now. They do have over 30 belts to throw around. A lot of new belts could be made :nut But Zhong went ahead and beat Cuello anyways so its not a biggie.
Zhong sliding in ahead of Cuello is nothing compared with the unfairness of many of Zou's decisions in the amateurs in much of his major international action. Zhong for all his limitations is a real hardworking pro, to say nothing of the fact that he is almost literally a midget and never backed down against much larger men his entire career, always the one to apply pressure (earning him the nicknames "Little Chinese Tyson" and "Pocket Hercules"). Zou had everything handed to him (training with Roach, headlining big Top Rank cards while still a novice, rushed into a world title shot) and didn't seem to ever take it half as seriously as Zhong despite having double his natural talent. Even as the Ruenroeng match was slipping away from him, all he did about it rather than switch gears or display any determination, let alone desperation, was laugh & showboat - while getting schooled! atsch I'll always root for somebody like XZZ (gutsy overachiever) rather than a Shiming (entitled, spoiled, lazy). :good
