Is it just me or is a fighters chin holding up as he moves up in weight class maybe the most impressive ingredient of the equation? Some of the greatest chins of all time have failed when said iron chinned fighter faced a far larger man. Dick Tiger against Bob Foster. Danny Nardico and Bob Murphy were both bigger men than LaMotta. Antonio Margirito against the much larger Daniel Santos. McCullough was dwarfed in size by Oscar Larios, and stopped by him. Joey Maxim being stopped by Curtis Shepard. Maxim's only stoppage. Miske against Dempsey, potentially. Miske's only stoppage loss. Basillio against Fulmer?
Basillio's chin held out pretty well vs Fullmer, Gene was never going to get the ten count over Carman. Fullmer would knock Basilio down, Basilio would get up and take more punishment from Fullmer's fist. Most middleweights would have been ko with the beating Basillio got in there. Fullmer won mostly on beating Carman down, than forceing the ref to stop the fight.
Oh, I know that. I've seen the end of the fight. But Fullmer showed he was capable of having Basilo out on his feet. Robinson never showed that as far as I know.
Basillio aways strike me as the type of guy thats inpossible to knockout. Stop sure, its happen before. Fullmer stop him, but not knockout. Basillio's chin stay with him as he move up imo. I mean Paret got the same treatment from Fullmer, and Benny didnt get up from that. Fullmer was not a knockout power puncher like Walker or even Dempsey, BUT he can beat you up, than put you out. Carman could have fought Louis and Foreman, at his weight, and sure it may have lasted a round or 2 if that, but I dont think they get the ten count. The ref would have to stop it, or Carman may get killed. All time iron chin. Even in the middleweights.
but by the time lamotta fought nardico he was past his prime struggling with problems and his gaining weights between fights and drinking caught up with him so that knockout wasnt that impressive ya dig
..bob foster againts the heavyweights. however, while i'm here...doug jones is often listed as one of the heavyweights who kayoed foster. but jones was al light heavy at the time of their fight. maxim came back three weeks later to score a decision win over shepard. i don't think shepard was all that much heavier at the time, but i haven't checked. plus...maxim was a rated heavyweight for a while before he dropped down to go after the light heavy crown. as a light heavy he fought ezzard charles three times...as a heavy twice. went the distance each time. as a light heaVY he fought archie moore two or three times and always went the distance. he held his own against jersey joe walcott..was in with a lot of big punchers in his career, and, as mentioned curtis sheppard, who was the only one to keep him down. i'd say his chin held up against both heavys and light heavys. a very very good light heavy in an era of some of the greatest of that division.
Bob Foster is the first person that comes to mind. Against the heavyweights, he could hold up. He could still hit like a mule, but his chin all but vanished.
McCullough wasn't stopped by Larios' punches. He was stopped due to the doctor coming to the conlusion he was so far behind and was taking unnecassary punishment. You forgot to mention when McCullough took Hamed the distance and never moved from his punches and the same counts for his fight against Larios. McCullough's chin never failed when moving up in weight. He never hit the canvas and wasn't wobbled or hurt.
Russell. What if Hagler was stopped due to the cut against Hearns when the doctor intervened, would his chin come under the 'failed' bracket? I do understand that Hagler wasn't stepping up but thats irrelevant. McCullough was never floored in his life or hurt and I put a case forward why his chin was better than Hagler's at the start of the week. McCullough's chin went out of it's comfort zone more than Hagler's. He fought fighters, Hamed and Morales, who were not just chilling punchers for their respective weights but also much stronger physically. McCullough was a natural bantamweight who had no business sharing a ring with Hamed 10 years ago at 126lbs.
jeff fenech at bantam he had a good chin and was hard to hurt and stop. at super bantam he was just as strong and as aggresive as ever...slightly slower but still very similar to his bantamwieght days. at featherwieght he was hit with a left uppercut from victor callejes and was clearly hurt and reacted horribly to it...recouperated and stopped victor. doesnt matter bump in the road wbc champ 3 wieght champion. goes up to super feather and gets dropped by martinez.....still good he won the fight pretty one sidedly.... fights azumah nelson and tho now fightign a guy of decent size starts to really go and swarms and catches azumah somewhat off guard with his immesnyl aggrssive under our nose fighting style. gets scored a draw shame fights azumah in a rematch.....the guy doesnt have any legs to stand on the whole fight. then in a return match gets stopped by calvin ****ing grove and holiday in the III "fight" with azumah he was hurt at the end of the fight as well. this could be a case of a guy being out of his prime...but it wasnt liek he wasnt winning rounds
Margarito's chin didn't fail him against Daniel Santos - the best punch of the fight, the one which did the most visible damage was a Margarito right hand that had Santos dancing to the ropes.
