Corrie Sander's seemed to have a pretty fragile chin. But when a title was involved during a massive payday against Vitali, right after Sander's scored his bigger ever win over Vitali's brother....

He took disgusting punishment in that fight and never went down. He had salivia flying out of his mouth from some of the shots Rocky Balboa style.

That's a stark contrast from getting sparked cold by Nate Tubbs in two.

Who else? What gave them that great chin for one night only?

Early in George Foreman's comeback he fought a journeyman called Rocky Sekorski.

A very small heavyweight, weighing 200 pounds if not less early in his career.

The commentators for that fight mentioned that he had watched Foreman during the Olympics as a kid, and was a fan of his, but that wasn't going to hold him back.

I have never, EVER seen someone eat flush shots from Foreman the way that kid did. Not even Chuvalo. Sekorski was always a game, durable fighter but it was disgusting watching the abuse he took that night. And he never went down as far as I remember. Un****ingbelievable.

I still can't get over that big shot in what the 12th or 13th round of Arguello-Pryor. Aaron had been on the deck in some previous bouts & I'd never seen a guy absorb that straight as an arrow right hand that Arguello could set up. It was a fight finisher punch he'd setup. He couldn't always fire it in some fights but he hit Pryor right on the chin with it late in a fight & the guy went nowhere. That right hand he saved for the whole fight knocks down lots of other 140 lb champs.

I wonder if Benn going to a hypnotist before the McClellan fight had anything to do with his chin and ability to recover that fight...

Some guys chins are too strong for their well-being!

There's been plenty of examples over the years where it would have been better for all concerned if the fighter had been put away a lot earlier!

Some referees have got a lot to be sorry for too!

Terry Norris was never renowned for a tough chin, but the night he fought Donald Curry he weathered some incredible shots to take out Curry in 8.

Yeah, that shot in the 13th was a killer. The first I watched that fight I was shocked that Pryor didn't go down, and that Arguello didn't shatter his hand completely with how hard he hit Pryor. Although it's always been a pet theory of mine that Arguello hurt his hand with that punch... I've never dug up anything on it but aside for the combo he tried to follow that shot up, (pretty much all of which got deflected off course) he didn't throw another right with cinviction in the fight.

    Perhaps.

But he did land that A#1 shot in there he'd been setting up the whole fight and not much happened. It has to be discouraging and the mindset of a Pryor was okay you got yours in, now we'll work on some payback.

Eddie Davis got flattened and nearly taken out in a single round by Qawi before rallying, yet later hardly took a backwards step while absorbing bomb after bomb from Mike Spinks. Nobody else ever come that close to decisioning Michael at his natural weight.

For that match, Eddie tried subliminal programming techniques in training, and also got whipped into the finest physical condition of his career. (Refusing to let himself become dependent on boxing, Eddie kept his day job as a full time department store clerk, so this was no small achievement.) At the outset of each round, Davis would pause for a split second in his corner after getting up from his stool, taking a moment to concentrate for mentally shifting into an altered state of consciousness before resuming action. (This head down hesitation might have been fatal against a Foreman type opening charge, but Mike never tried taking advantage of these unguarded lapses.)

Sekorski was a durable son of a ***** for sure. He took flush powershots from Sanders all night in their fight and lasted the distance.

...Which is one of the reasons I have never rated Vitali as a huge hitter, certainly so when you look at his KO percentage, which I think is quite misleading.

Sanders' chin was okay, but nothing special. The Tubbs fight illustrated that well, and I watched a young Sanders get poleaxed in the amateurs by a guy called Alan Saffy, who caught Sanders with a single punch and dropped him like a sack of rocks.

Back to topic, Levi Billups against Lennox Lewis comes to mind. He absorbed quite a few Lewis rights hands and barely blinked. However if you look at his record, it shows quite a few stoppage losses, maybe even one or two by Ko. (I forget the details at the moment.)
I always found that one a bit of a head-scratcher.
