Yeah that's interesting and a quick read of a few sites suggest the Polynesians can have up to 20% more bone density over Europeans. Looking at him now, it make sense.
Yeah that is exactly what it is, and it's not just samoan's and polynesians. I grew up with two best friends (they are brothers) who have massive bone density, when they are really really slim, they are very very heavy on the scales. Even another 15 year old kid I know is a bit chubby at 5 ft 9 and he is 100 kilos.
Explains partly why countries like Samoa and Fiji do comparatively well at sports like Rugby relative to their size and population. Very unique body type which isn't really seen anywhere outside of the Polynesian islands.
