There will be a press conference today to announce the rematch to be held in queensland. The press conference will be held up there with a sydney conference next week, the fight will take place in April, I think the fight would have been much better held in Sydney however looks like a few will have to travel
Garth Wood camp suspicious over Anthony Mundine rematch by Paul Kent - Daily Telegraph - 16th Feb 2011 GARTH Wood and Anthony Mundine will today announce their rematch - and the unlikely Brisbane venue causes great heartburn for the Wood camp. They are concerned why the Mundine camp insisted the fight must be staged in Brisbane in light of estimates showing the fight will gross as much as $500,000 less than if it were in Sydney. The last time Mundine fought in Queensland he was allowed to weigh-in at his dressing room hours before the rest of the fighters on the card. The last time Mundine was in Queensland he cornered Sonny Bill Williams' fight and constantly stood on the ring apron during rounds. Clearly, Mundine is treated well in Queensland. Wood's manager Michael Karigiannis refused to reveal the list of grievances ahead of today's press conference. However, of great concern is that Queensland is the only Australian state without a government legislated boxing authority, the sport instead being ruled by the Australian National Boxing Federation. Karigiannis will request a sit-down with the federation. "Our concern in Queensland is some of the occurrences we have seen while fighting on his undercard during our sabbatical last year," he said. "There are concerns and we will be seeking a briefing with the relevant combat authority." TAB Sportsbet's Glenn Munsie said without question boxing was on the nose in Australia, but maintained faith the Wood-Mundine rematch will be on the level. The Danny Green-Paul Briggs fiasco is still recent in memory, and the anaemic inquiry that followed it did nothing to dispel fears about the integrity of the sport. Munsie is uncertain whether TAB Sportsbet will field on the fight. "Our concern is with the public perception of boxing in Australia," he said. "The average man in the street, I believe, doesn't think boxing is going any good in this country because of a number of things that have happened." Regardless, the fight goes ahead. The main reason being there was nobody else for either man to fight. No doubt Mundine will make a lot of wanting revenge for his knockout loss last year, and once again it will be nothing more than hot air from a man blessed with the gift for it. Nobody overseas is interested in Mundine any more - a planned world title fight was scrapped that night because the promoters couldn't sell him after the loss - and he has already fought everybody in Australia. For Wood to command a Mundine-sized purse he would need a far more experienced opponent than his relatively novice status allows. To find a similar level of experience, though, would require a significant pay cut. It left a Mundine rematch the only viable option.
"Munsie is uncertain whether TAB Sportsbet will field on the fight" What a joke of a comment by munsie, they know that they will have a market for the fight. Its no wonder the TAB is losing punters everyday to their competitors. This ****wit said the same thing about Danny v BJ on melb radio and the next day odds were up for rd betting as well as head to head.
Just proves Woods and his team are weak WHY NOT hold to their guns and tell Mundine to go to hell. They were in charge of this fight saying they would not fight outside Sydney....What happenes Mundine gets his way AGAIN! Why why WHYYYY didn't Woods just say NO to this fight. It should be on his terms not Mundines. Weak woods very weak.
Hard to argue with that. The date Contendo predicted a few days ago looks like it'll be confirmed at the presser later on today: 'ANTHONY MUNDINE will seek to avenge his shock defeat to Garth Wood last December in a rematch at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on April 13'. http://www.smh.com.au/sport/boxing/mundine-wood-set-for-rematch-in-april-20110215-1av5q.html
money.he is getting a big payday that he wont get anywhere else.the first fight was supposed to be at SMW but Mundine changed it to MW.same with Medley supposed to be at 154 changed to 160 late he still fought.standing by ones principles is noble but dont buy you nice things.
There's every chance he means their Sydney supporters would be forced to get on a plane if they want to attend the fight Adam - that's what I took it to mean - and I agree with him.
Mundine will be flying Joe Cortez in to ref the rematch, so how he chooses to ref the fight will depend on whether Mudnine wants to clinch all fight (like Hopkins vs Calzaghe) or keep Woods away from him (like Hatton vs Mayweather) :yep QLD = Mundine's scales, weigh-in in his hotel room with a friendly official present to witness it, ref and judges in his pocket. Look out Australia, looks like we're destined for a THRILLOGY!!!
yeah i realised this... as soon as i hit "submit post" (its been a long morning at work).... but couldnt be arsed to delete it. edit: posts ;like the above from IrnBruMan dont help the paranoia though
This'd be the same guy that said 'this will be my last fight in Australia' about 5 fights ago. after the press conference: Mundine's career could be on the line from ABC Grandstand Sport - about 10 minutes ago. Anthony Mundine has admitted his boxing career could be on the line when he meets Garth Wood in a rematch. Lacking much of his trademark brashness, Mundine fronted a press conference on Wednesday to confirm the clash would go ahead at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on April 13. The former world champion was stunned by inexperienced boxing reality tv show winner Wood on December 8, knocked out in the fifth round after a run of 17 straight wins. That loss in Sydney potentially cost him a shot at a World Boxing Association title and Mundine agreed his career could be over if he hits the canvas again against Wood. "It could be, man," said Mundine. "Right now I'm only looking at short-term goals. I was looking above and beyond too much in the past. "I've got to be victorious. I've got one purpose, one goal and that is to win."
