Potato Peelin' Pete McTaggert trained Soldier Smith after his own career ended, due to that really sad "gesture" he made with an actual potato peeler, when a fan approached him to sign an autograph, then suggested that Black ****** Irish O'Day would've gilded his lily over 20 rounds.

Carlos Palomino grew his mustache in honor of the memory of ...guess who? That's right. The aforementioned McMustache.

They both ducked the Boston Cabbage Patch Baby, so this is irrelevant.

Shyeah, like they had to duck a guy that supposedly took a "dive" against 14-3-7 South San Francisco Sam "The Texan" McSampson.

The Potato Peeler really is unfairly underrated these days.

The more mainstream "historians" among us may go for the likes of Charley Burley, but here was a man who truly mastered the lost art of bareknuckle fisting.

IF only footage of his legendary series with "whiskey drinkin'" Bud McTavish could be seen in all it's glory.

dinosaurs?! one punch at a time and constant clinching is CLEARLY superior to combinations and no footage, statistics or records will convince me different.

it's digusting how little recognition canadian star, maple o'moose receives on here. at least chocolate negro and soldier received a shout out by pachilles...me and my canuck friends are the only ones that remember maple o'moose who set the punchstat record in 1908 with an average of 3 punches per round in his 82 round war with quebecs pierre de la tabernac. do you know the kind of workrate it took at the turn of the century to throw 3 punches per round?! that's like 400 punches a second in today's numbers

Judging from their showings against Corporal Tom Bomblast and Battling Nipper Morgan, I'd say the Chocolate Negro Kid was the better fighter.

Obviously, styles make fights, and Soldier Smith might just have the Kid's number.
He was known for his famed "Rivet punch" after all.

it's the blow that enabled him to compile a brilliant record of 11 wins, 4 losses and 752 no contests

And the truly amazing thing about that record is that they all occurred within the space of the six month period years before he went off to war, and don't include the numerous exhibitions that he fought during the time he spent in the Army. Nor do they include the unsanctioned contests that he had in prison when he ran afoul of the law a few years later.

If we take all those fights into account, his record is even more incredible! He'd had at least 20 wins on his ledger for sure!

oh certainly! there are many reports found written on napkins in mustard, that tell of his exhibitions and ability to outmuscle opponents weighing as much as 145 pounds (quite impressive for a heavyweight in those days)
