Odd OP (guess he meant one of few Asian boxers to win a title above middle?) but still, deserves some attention.

Chinny for sure. Wasn't in frame for Hagler so went up to new SMW division to grab a title, which he defended a fair few times. Great fight with Baek. Fully Obel got the better of him twice.

Just good rather than brilliant and certainly not great.

Anyone else wanna' contribute? Sure lora will know more about him than I, so let's hear it.

Korea has completely dropped off in terms of boxing, and what a shame that is. I believe they have one boxer ranked in the top 30 of any division nowadays (Kim at 135) might be someone down at straw or light fly but can't think. Really good amateur down at light fly but his name escapes me.

That's sad.

 

Remember in 88 Olympics Golota got his tail kicked by a big Korean, then in the gold medal bout Ray Mercer put the guys lights out.

Chong-Pal Park, 5' 10" with a good reach of 72', and very good power.

Amateur career, 80-3 (36 KO's) - where he competed at both Welterweight
and Light-Middleweight.

Great expectations when he turned Professional in November 1977 at only age 17.

Went 3-0-1 (2 KO's), when on June 14, 1978 - they foolishly put the 17 1/2 year-old
in the ring with 23 year-old 'knockout artist' Hung-Won Kang 19-2-0 (17 KO's).

Chong-Pal got blasted away at 1:43 of Round 1.

Talented fighter held back by a Norton-esque weak chin and fear of punchers.As mentioned he was a 160lber that moved up because he was struggling to get fights at middle.

He was well-balanced and fluid offensively.Good reflexes, punchpicking, combos and feints.But could be very unsure of himself, outworked and taken off his game\made sloppy when caught solidly.

Similar style and weaknesses to his countryman amatuer star of the same era, Chan-Hee Park.

I've heard various opinions on him over the years from Korean boxing followers, but generally i don't get the feeling he was held in the same respect as various othe contemporary KOrean fighters: certainly Chang, or Yuh, or even Soo-Hwan Hong, Chan Hee-Park, Tae-Shik Kim etc

He was often nicknamed the glass chin\glass jaw, some derogatory term like that anyway.
