BOXING SKILLS...Pernell Whitaker vs Greg Haugen

Power...It has to be THOMAS HEARNS v ROBERTO DURAN for me. A one-punch KO of an iron-chinned ATG, there cannot be a much better exhibition of power than that. Second choice JULIAN JACKSON v HEROL GRAHAM, a more devastating KO yes, but Graham was not in the same league of durability as Duran, who went 15 rounds with Hagler after the Hearns fight.

Speed...ROY JONES JR v Bryant Brannon

Boxing Skills...PERNELL WHITAKER v Greg Haughen

Defence...FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR v Phillip N'Dou, or any Bernard Hopkins fight

Infighting...ROBERTO DURAN v Sugar Ray Leonard I, or James Toney v Iran Barkley

Chin...I can't decide on this one yet...

power: Julian Jackson vs Herol Graham unbelievable
speed: Manny Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio Barrera self-explanatory
boxing skills: James Toney vs Vassilly Jirov a masterpiece
defence: hmmmm tough one. Hopkins vs Jones amazed me even though he lost the fight, he was barely hit all night.
infighting: James Toney vs Vassily Jirov again
chin: Margarito vs Cotto Cotto could have brought a baseball bat to the ring, wouldn't have made a difference

Good choices, Hopkins v Jones is a particularly interesting one though. How close did you have the fight?

power - jackson v graham ( one punch can change a fight, watch this to prove )
speed - sugar ray leonard v hagler ( made hagler look a bit silly )
skills - mayweather v hatton ( made a good fighter look decidely average )
infighting - hatton v castillo ( best one i can think of, mauled castillo on the inside )
chin - mclellan v benn ( could also be the other way round, but this is an example of when a good chin works against you , if geralds chin would have been weaker, things might be different for him now )

just off the top of my head

8-4 jones but Jones was a phenomenon at that time. He looked bad against Hopkins. Merchant was saying things like "I've seen Sugar Ray Leonard and Roy Jones is no Sugar Ray Leonard" and Lampley saying that maybe Jones was getting too much hype. etc etc etc. Hopkins was just too good defensively. Unfortunately he didn't have the offensive arsenal and speed to win rounds.

I thought Jones was quicker on quite a few other occasions than the Brannon fight. I think people are getting overexcited about the 5 left hooks in one second combo from the Youtube video.

    Which occasions?

Punch Power....Miranda Vs. Banks/Torres-HoltII - this speaks for itself

Speed...Berto Vs. Forbes/Jones Vs. Calzaghe - Forbes is by no means a slow poke, he has some good hand speed but, when Berto was throwing punches it looked like i was watching the fight in Fast-Foward

and for Roy to have that kind of handspeed at that age is absolutely ridiculous, and once again Calzaghe himself has great hand speed and for him to of been that much faster was amazing

Boxing Skills.. JMM Vs. Cassamayor - Cassamayor is one of the best counter punches of the era, and to see him getting outboxed and outcountered was pretty amazing

Defense...Bradley Vs. Cherry - i was most impressed with this one because i'd never seen nor heard of Bradley before this and he was slick as ****, Cherry was throwing some fast punches and they weren't overly wide but he rarely got caught clean all night, and when he did he rolled with it to take away from the power, i was very impressed

Infighting....Margarito Vs. Cotto/Vasquez Vs. Marquez III - both fighters in both fights showed some top notch infighting ability

Chin.....Peter Vs. Klitchsko/Kirkland Vs. Vera/Margarito Vs. Cotto - some tough ass *****s, dont need to explain anything here

    Toney and Pazienza for starters.

Hmmm maybe. I don't like to think of the Paz fight as an example of Jones's greatness as it was such an appalling mismatch, and I don't like to think of the Toney fight as I don't like to remember how easily Toney was beaten, but I suppose Jones was indeed rapier-like in both.
