Despite the shutout loss to a top p4p fighter in Manny Pacqiauo, and the general consensus that any aspirations of attempting to become a champ again should never be thought of...ever, the medical student and ex welterweight king still finds himself in a position to earn, and earn well for years to come. Not bad for a kick boxing nurse turned pro pugilist only 6 years ago. As we know, beatability goes a long way in the world of boxing, in terms of promoters knocking on your door with an avaricious plan. And Chris Algieri will find himself definitely not bereft of offers. He's now an ex Wba champ. Say what you will, his scalp will look good on anyones boxing resume. He went the distance with the Pacman. Granted, he spent a good part of the fight star fished on the canvas. But the result stands. Even if he had trouble. That'll also look good on anyone's resume. They'll be lining up to fight the flower fisted collegiate. He's reasonably low risk, high-ish reward. Why low risk? Even though he can ostensibly dance around your cash cow that you're trying to land a title shot for, like he did against a one dimensional Provodnikov.....he was easier to hit for an ageing Pacman than a beach ball with a nine iron. So he ain't that much of an allusive genius. That doesn't mean you can't market him as one. And of course he's high reward as beating him will adorn your resume with the win against the ex wba welterweight king. Like it or lump it, Algieri and his highly unsatisfying boxing style is here to stay. He will be the perennial contender, gate keeper, journeyman - stat padder. But hopefully never again champ. People just wouldnt want that, and he'll be harder to sell as boxing champ as selling gum to the toothless.
I think people tend to forget that he still plans to go to medical school. He obviously has the money now, and the extra curricular achievement to get into any school he wants. Expect him to fight maybe one or two more bouts, and then become a doctor. He will then make more money as an elite sports doctor/nutritionist than any boxer not named Floyd or Manny or Wlad. Dont be surprised if he starts a line of nutrition stuff you see at GNC at some point.
I question his intelligence for associating with a freak like Tim Lane. I dont think he cuts it at medical school. Picking up your studies again late in life is not for everyone, and he's gotten a taste of the high life with the pacman fight. On the other hand I hope he retires because he's a ****ty runner and runners should be shot.
I can see Kell Brook making a defense against him. If he goes down in weight he could win a belt again but he may find it hard to at 147lbs.
