This bout will head up the non-title portion of the undercard of the WBA doubleheader on Showtime on December 5th, co-headlined by Jesus Cuellar vs. Jonathan Oquendo @ featherweight and Daniel Jacobs vs. Peter Quillin @ middleweight. Both are coming off losses - Algieri to Amir Khan & Manny Pacquiao in back to back unanimous decisions and Bone to Shawn Porter via KO5. Both have previously campaigned at light welterweight. At that weight, Algieri briefly held the WBO version of the world title (never defended) after upsetting Ruslan Provodnikov, and Bone was the interim and later full South American champion going 5-0 (3) in battles for various iterations of this belt. At welterweight specifically they have only a couple of achievements of note between them, with Algieri outclassing Emanuel Taylor with a clear UD on FNF and Bone putting a beating on Gato Figueroa en route to a 5th round TKO in a GFL.tv main event.
Chris is officially a Haymon fighter and it seems that they are really trying to keep his name hot. I see Bone out boxing him though. I may be wrong because while I was typing I forgot about Jackson being Chris new trainer.
Algieri is accustomed to having a height and reach advantage but here will be looking Bone dead in the eye and facing a 2" deficit in wingspan. That said, Algieri should be a heavy (if not prohibitive) favorite with his greatest successes and near-misses coming at much higher a level than do the Ecuadorian's. Emanuel Taylor rates above Gato Figueroa, and the 2nd best 147lb victory for Algieri (shot Mike Arnaoutis) may even cancel it out. Lightning Bone is a solid fighter, holding talented and then-unbeaten Panamanian southpaw Alberto "Metralleta" Mosquera to a split decision in 2013 and just last year defeating Mexican tough nut Mahonri "Ruso" Montes with far more ease than Ashley Theophane would - but he just hasn't mixed company with anyone close to Algieri's four or five best opponents.
Algieri will school him with relative ease. Algieri with JDJ is a beast and he'll only get better.:deal
Yo CST80, Shout out to you for putting guys up on Caleb Plant. He is having his 6th fight of the year tonight on PBC. I see potential for that guy if he is properly guided and focused.
I think it makes for perfect matchmaking to start Algieri's comeback. He should be able to figure Bone out and take it on points (neither of them is apt to so much as drop the other, even with their styles potentially making for some fast waltzing two-way melees with both absorbing lots of leather as they ease up their mostly responsible defenses to seize chances) but if he can't, then he may as well cop the loss here and not step back up in competition because it will mean his Icarus flight of Khan, Pac, and Provo all in the span of less than a year took enough from him to effectively cut his prime short.
Algieri vs. Taylor: [yt]9chegPzsHD0[/yt] Bone vs. Figueroa: [yt]EoyWLpH0uTQ[/yt] Algieri vs. Peralta-Alejo: [yt]upsTnCOBOjc[/yt] Bone vs. Montes: [yt]_N5tozVd8LU[/yt]
I absolutely agree. I think this fight is to see if Chris or Bone will be either a B or C level Haymon fighter, like the belt less legends in my eyes, Diaz, Karass, Lopez, Molina(not the chicago one).
I've watched some clips of Bone. He seems like a solid fighter who can cause problems to Algieri. I couldn't find one where he fights a mover like Algieri so I'm not sure if he'll be able to cut off the ring. That will probably be the key.
Bone actually looked pretty decent against Porter for a few rounds, especially considering the fight was on short notice. I wouldnt rule him out against Algieri
