Guys, I've had some blazing arguments (with Yanks and Philipinos mainly) on the sweetscience forum about this heavyweight Chris Arreola. I've seen all of his fights but I just can't see what they see, who are touting him as the next big thing at world HW level. He's a tough fighter but why is he so lauded and defended. Am I missing something with this guy? :bbb
I thought he was a heavyweight hope but that hope is slipping away with every pound of fat he puts on. If he doesn't get back in shape it is bound to catch up with him and slow him down, affect his stamina etc.
rccwilliams, I'm aware of his amateur career. However that has no reflection on my opinions of him in the pro game. (remember Audley Harrison). I'm judging him as pro and he's failing to show dedication or improvement. He appears to be actually easier to hit and less fit than he was an am amateur. How can anyone think this guy is the future leader of the Heavyweight Boxing world?
I like Arreola but he needs to get serious about his weight. It shows a lack of discipline. He's also been troubled by fighters with a decent jab and he's been knocked down by a less than heavy puncher (forgot the guys name) To his credit he came back to win that fight by KO & he's been on a roll since then, no pun intended :yep
I submit he does not yet have the demeanour of a champion, "class" if you like. It's not only a matter of actually winning a title, it's representing the people with bravery, with challenge, with strength, with conviction. People have to be proud of him, proud to say, "he's MY champion," and if he doesn't, that gives us another Sonny Liston.
I don't think he'll end up as some all time great or something similar but I think he'll be one of the top guys for a few years. I think he's already one of the 6-7 top guys in the division now and will probably get better over the next couple years. What I like about Arreola is that he is a fighter. He comes to fight every round. He has good power and puts together nice combinations. I think his chin is solid but I think we need to learn about more about it. He had a good amatuer career and has a few nice wins on his pro resume. Witherspoon and Walker were solid prospects when Arreola beat them. McCline is a good gatekeeper at this point in his career. Arreola beat all of them convincingly. He gets hit too easily sometimes but his obvious achilles hill is his weight and that will shape his career more than anything. If he gets and keeps it under control he'll have a good career but if he stays fat then his stay near the top will be short. I'd also like to see him face another test or two before facing a Klitschko. If he were to pick up some rounds against someone like Brewster or Peter first then I think he could give Vitali a real test. There are a few good young fighters like Arreola, Povetkin, and Haye who will probably get fed up to the Klitschkos a fight or two too early. Let those guys get some rounds in with some of the other contenders and they would stand decent chances with the Klitschkos. But if they face the brothers this year then they will be big underdogs.
Definitely hype the fact that he's an Amercan & a heavyweight in a land that can't stand not owning the titles means any guy over 200lb that try's on a pair of boxing gloves is lauded as the next champ. Anyone that lets this novice in the ring with a klitschko & that includes ma klitschko should be up on homicide charges
It was the same guy that reportedly decked Vitali in sparring (Travis Walker), in preperation for his fight agaist Rahman in late 05.
If he completely dedicated himself for the next 6 months and got down to 230-235 and was in better shape, he could ABSOLUTELY give Wlad Klit a tussle. He has good skills, it is just his conditioning that needs to vastly improve.
Any fighter that doesn't train 100% for every fight and treats the sport like it's part time when it's their job should get KO'd out of it and quick. Wladimir knocks this guy out within 4 rounds.
