Chris Arreola has been proven to have some talent in the past. I used to watch his fights expecting him to throw hurtful punches and have his opponents reeling. The level of opposition he was fighting was never spectacular, but he wasn't fighting anyone noteworthy last night either. He's seldom come to the ring in good shape, looking like a fighter who busted his ass during training camp, and I can see a decline in his work. I didn't see any snap in his punches at all last night, had he fought Quezada pre-Vitali, then I'm convinced that would have been over after 3-4 lopsided rounds. Chris Arreola is only hurting himself by coming to the ring in that kind of shape. I was moved by the emotion he showed after his first professional loss, but talk is cheap. He needs to give it his all in training camps, and he should be looking too come to the ring at least 10-15lbs lower than he has done in recent bouts. For a guy with a family and supposedly so much pride, it makes me wonder how he could allow this to carry on. If you give it your best and come up short, nothing more can be asked of you. He's not giving this sport the attention it requires. Thoughts on Chris Arreola?
Well here is what I said in another thread but I guess it's relevent here too. The problem is, people want to like him! they know he's a game fighter in the ring and brings it every fight. But he's not giving people enough of a reason to back him. He says one thing and does another. He was sat around in the interview before the fight saying he's now 100% focused and dedicated and not slacking off no more. You know what? I don't believe him. He's a liar and he's not willing to make the sacrifice in order to maximize his potential. Any fool can see, he's quick, has a good chin and some boxing skills. But look at the load he is carrying. I don't care if it's muscle or fat, cos at the end of the day its still effecting his mobility. He can't get out of the way of punches and he's somewhat slowed down from what i saw yesterday AND his technique has gone sloppy. The guy is just proving to people what they are saying about him, and that't not a good sign. He'll lose fans and he can only blame himself! People have tried to get on board this train, but it's Chris who is looking to derail it.
well he gets the same contempt as all boxers that dont come in to a fight in the best shape they can i think thats one of his dutys as a pro boxer and as you say talk is cheap 15 - 20 pounds lighter is no stratch and to be honest shouldnt be that hard theres alot of weight there that should go quickly in a proper training camp
I think all fighters (like all athletes) should strive to be the best they can be, for their own sake not just the fans who pay to watch. If he wants to be remembered as a fat waste of talent, he is right on track.
He has to put food on the table for his wife and children, also. He mentions them all the time in front of the camera, why doesn't that motivate him to maximize his potential?
He wasn't exciting, even when he threw harder punches. He was never destined for great things. He isn't a case of "if only he took it seriously". He just isn't good.
Irrelevant to my point. If he trained properly and didn't come to the ring in disgusting shape, then he'd undeniably be a more effective fighter. That's non-debatable. Arreola was blasting out the level of competition he fought last night in 3-4 rounds as he was rising the ranks.
If he doesnt show up under 240 in his next fight he might as well be done with his career. he should be thinking of it like that.
No, he was blasting out a somewhat lower level of competition, which is really saying something. He'd be more effective than he is, which would still leave him at "very ineffective". It's time to stop propping him up as this romantic figure who has all this potential but is cursed with a big appetite. When did you start watching him? Was it long before the win over Cliff Couser? Because that was my first glimpse of him, and in every performance since he has failed to demonstrate that there is anything about him that would make him a viable talent even with discipline. What exactly do you people think you're seeing that is escaping my notice? His boxing technique when applied in the ring (even during his undefeated "rising in the ranks" days) is/was even worse than his extracurricular between-camp habits. He is a terrible boxer. So he has (or had) power - so what? Why aren't you behind Travis Walker or David Tua, if power's all it takes to impress you?
I'm saying that in order to get the most out of this sport, you need to dedicate your life too it. if Arreola was doing that, he would not be weighing what he is. I'm not romanticizing him, I'm not saying he could have been the next Joe Louis, I'm saying he's blowing it. He needs to make as much money and achieve as much as physically possible so that he can provide for his family and himself. I'm not supposing he'll be throwing combination's like Joe Louis if he gets skinnier, nor am I suggesting he'll be a World Champion - I'm saying he should want to get in the ring in shape for his family, if not for himself. I couldn't careless if you feel that he's the same fighter he'd always been, I'm saying that needs to stop now and he needs to make changes. You can apply this method of thinking to anything in life, you give everything your best. He isn't doing that...it's obvious.
The OP asks some good questions. On the main page I've almost been supporting CA. He was disappointing last nite - CA called it a C- performance. He has the type of build where he'll never looked very ripped. But you don't have look like a body builder to be a top boxer. OTOH Chris needs to get in better shape, where he'd clearly be more effective. Why isn't he more dedicated? Who knows. It's very hard for many people to take off weight, to lay off the fattening food and drink. He's had some success and made some money as is. CA also is puffing up easily vs an ordinary fighter like he faced Fri nite. What's going to happen vs harder, more accurate punchers... it won't be pretty. Now pushing 30, he is at a cross roads.
That's a fair point but he still gets opportunities and makes money by not training properly - so where's the Pavlovian impulse for him to do so? He gets positive reinforcement for slacking off. Why would anyone expect him to change? He obviously doesn't have the hunger of a world champion; otherwise he would have seized the opportunity when it landed in his lap. He's clearly quite content slobbing around the division as he has been.
IB is stuck on this idea of him never being exciting and he's running with it every chance he gets, not realizing that has nothing to do with what I'm trying to put across. You're absolutely right, he'd undeniably be a more effective fighter if he came into the ring in decent shape. It boggles the mind that a man with his responsibilities hasn't made more sacrifices.
You're right, he is. But why hasn't he made changes? He certainly knows that he'll be making less money fighting on ESPN2 than he will on HBO. Money isn't an incentive? He surely knows that with more money he can buy nicer things for his family and reinforce their future? Is this not enough incentive? He's a Mexican American, he wants to make his name in this sport. Is that not enough incentive? Even taking pride in your appearance, is that not enough incentive? Do you leave the house smelling of B.O and wearing smelly clothes? You don't, why not? Because you have pride in yourself, and you don't want people avoiding you because of bad hygiene. The whole world is watching his belly hanging over his shorts.
What I'm saying does tie in with that, Addie. Tiger, stripes, etc. After the Klitschko debacle he should have been grateful for a second chance - which he got, and didn't take seriously. Even the headlining spot on ESPN2 was more than he deserved following two losses and two laughable camps. Even then, it didn't light a fire under his ass. He doesn't have the requisite championship level of hunger and passion; it simply isn't in him. It isn't that it was there when the knockouts were coming easier for him but is now gone - it's that it isn't in his character to buckle down and put in the work...never has been and never will be (and it has shown in his performances every step of the way). :deal
