Take a peek at round 9. What do you see? I see Vitali throwing punches back with BOTH hands. I see a man who walks to his corner, and while his corner is getting him ready for the next round he simply tells them he can't go on. It hurts too much. I mean when he quits...does he really look like he is in that much pain? He does not have the look on his face of agonizing pain when the ref calls off the fight. For those of you that have competed in high level 1 on 1 sports...when your adrenaline kicks in your in high gear..your in warrior mode...it takes a hell of a lot to make you feel pain..usually you do not feel it until post fight. Now I have no doubt vitali was in pain with his rotator cuff..but was it severe enough with his adrenaline kicked in, to quit? Why couldn't he go out in the last 3 rounds and do what he did in round 9? He quit against a powerless cruiserweight who absolutely had no chance of hurting him. Vitali could have easily fended him off with 1 hand if he had too...Only a couple rounds of sucking up an injury. Why couldn't he do it? Even 10 years later, this still leaves a bitter distaste in my mouth.

"He doesn't have the mentality of a champion. I cannot believe what i just saw. I have never seen anything like that. Im Speechless. All he had to do was survive. hes way ahead on points. all he needs to do his play defense for 2 rounds, and win the fight.- Larry Merchant

Nobody gives a F what taste it leaves in your mouth. The man does not show much emotions or expressions during a fight, even against Lewis with half of his face cut up he had the same look on his face......................face it with your bad taste in your mouth that he is one tough son of a ***** against ANY HWT past and present who despite being inactive for half a decade and old now still mops the floor with every current Hwt out there. He only has a small window left to ice clowns like Haye or Povetkin before he is over the hill.

    BTW, VK ko's Marciano. Fact.

I dont know what happened in the Byrd fight, certainly very strange to quit like that, but I think his fight with Lewis showed he was the real deal for toughness, I dont see how anyone can think hes a bit soft after that, his brother maybe but not VK.

But his brother never ever quit under adversity. he always fought on..even when knocked out. I think Wlad is tougher.

A lot more fighters have quit for smallers reasons than that, that get a lot less ****. It was 10 years ago, let it go, he has proved his guts and heart after that, no need bringing this up again.

I think that Vitaliy doesn't have this actor manner (look Dirrell, Hopkins). He could do a scene "PAIN, OH THE PAIN, I'M SO HURT, I'M SO MAD THAT I CAN'T FIGHT!" But what for? Lost is a lost. I think that he isn't very expressive person, and he really was hurt.

Even if he was hurt thats not really the point because he could have just run the next 2 rounds, Arthur Abraham fought on after Miranda broke his jaw real bad, I think he quit for some other weird reason becuase he showed heart vs Lennox Lewis.

Well, he didn“t quit because he was in pain but because his career was in jeapardy when he would have went on with this injury.

    :rofl:rofl:rofl

    I agree.

i read a post on the Klitschko Main website a long time ago that is no longer up where Vitali went into depth into why he quit. It was in the career section of the Page and the excerpt about the byrd fight was more so a small part of the whole part of the story of his career.

Vitali talks about how up till that point he approached boxing as a sport where you (forgive me a long time ago so i'm going to use my own words) take care of your body. over in europe they dont have this "heart" stigma us americans do so during that fight yea maybe vitali wasn't in that much pain but he thought why jeopardize the rest of my CAREER over 2 rounds. after the fight he caught massive backlash from the american media and vowed he would never quit in a fight again (which is proven by his iron will in the lewis fight where his career was in more jeopardy then the byrd fight).

sometime after the lewis fight his website got a overhaul to accommodate his surge in popularity. all i have is my WORD since my source not longer exists but maybe one day VK will release a book about it and when you read it you'll know who said it first .

Yeah I figure he just took the cold practical route of not wanting to permanently damage his shoulder, just like any other athlete does the same.

Just a difference in cultures as mentioned above, he showed exceptional heart vs Lewis I thought.

I really dont know what was going through his head, it was a bad decision. Other fighters have fought on with similar injuries and either sucked it up or only used there good arm. I'm not sure he liked the fact Byrd was coming on strong either.

I've had a torn rotator, it hurts to punch off it, but you can punch with 30% of the effectiveness and not have it hurt. With mine I could usually change my punch technique so it doesnt hurt though I'd be getting about 30% of the usual power. Funny thing with rotator injurys is carrying a shopping bag can be hell but you can still get near your max on shoulder lifts without too much pain but dont think of throwing a fast explosive punch you turn over

According to the HBO Tape, Vitali was complaining of a hurt arm in round three. What we have here is Vitali taking the fight with a prime Chris Byrd in less than two weeks, and pretty much being up 8-2 on the cards with one good arm.

Vitali feared for his career in this match, a young career that had a lot of promise so he retired rather than risk permanent injury. Being a sports doctor, he knew the risks better than most.. Had Vitali knew some in the media would have go after him, maybe he changes this decision. Hard to tell.

Of course Vitali would batter Marciano around the ring like a pineta, but that's besides the point. SuizeQ has bought this thread up at least five times. He's fixated on this, so I like to remind him that guys he like such as LaMotta, and Charles also quit in the ring. In fact the hall of fame is full of fighters who retired, and in many cases did not have an injury that required surgery to a critical working part as Vitali did.

Technically Marciano did opt out in an amateur fight when he gassed out. Depending on the source either kicked the other guy in the groin or stomach to get DQ'd
