Vitali was prepping for Razor Ruddock, and had to switch training for a competely different style of fighter on short notice.. Vitlai torn his ligaments in his shoulder in round three, and was beating Byrd with one good arm. Later in the fight, his arm went numb. Being an educated sports person with his entire career ahead of him, Vitlai opted to retire.

Byrd never wanted any part of the re-match. He was a lucky dog.

Its a good thing Merchant was around in Lamotta's and Pep's day SuzieQ, because they also quit. In fact the hall of fame is full of fighters who quit.

Gene Tunney had a broken nose and bad, bad cuts against Greb, and continued.

You don't ****ing think Vitali's cut against Lewis, which HE continued with, was bad?

Give me a break. As magoo already stated, some of this schoolyard bull**** is ridiculous.

Blood is one thing. Vitlai fought like a lion when he was cut. Torn ligaments to a critcal joint for boxing is another.

This is all speculation. His track record certainly doesn't support this theory you made.

Evander Holyfield fought 12 rounds against Chris Bryd at age 40 with a TORN ROTATOR CUFF. He lasted the distance, in a LOSING effort.

Vitali only had 2 rounds to go, he was up against a harmless feather puncher. He could have easily survived and been praised a warrior.

Erm, Evander has the advantage of far more durable and stronger ligaments/muscles than Vitali due to steroid abuse.

Vitali wouldn't have a tenth the injuries he has if he continued using steroids outside of his kickboxing career.

Not to mention Evander is far worse than a quitter... He's a ****ing dirty ******* in the ring, and a cheater outside it.

I am certain that Vitali has been done for steroid abuse too in his kickboxing days too :huh

Vitali tested positive for steroids in the late 1990s. He was a steroid freak too.

The fact he used steroids is a black mark on his carer, This automatically eliminates him from any list I compose.

Agree about that, I am not a big holy fan despite reading his excellent biography.

    dont be such a pessimist.

for example there is no way Joe Calzaghe has ever taken performance enhancing drugs

Meh, it happens. None of us know the condition Vitali was in at that point. It goes beyond just quitting. There are cases of guys careers being ended because they chose to continue through an injury like this. At that point in time, I imagine he though "Well, I can go ahead and fight two more rounds and possibly end my career. Or I can throw in the towel, lose this one and go on to fight more times". I can see why he made his choice.

You've got to look at Vitali's medical past too. The guy is a wreck physically. it's obviously an important aspect of his decision to quit.

I don't think you can write him off as a fighter with no heart. I iamgine he had more heart than Liston, for example.

It's the truth, if you know anything about supplementation in sports.

i was goign to say the same thing. as soon as i said 'dislocated shoulder' danny williams came to mind. danny is a different breed he knew he could stop potter where as i think vitali knew he couldnt. also his shoulder was setting and unsetting throught out the fight it wasnt a torn rotator cuff.

to all those who are saying that a torn rotator cuff is painful...well done you earned your well done sticker. but boxers get smacked in the face for and hour and a bit and dont complain. in boxing you have to get hurt or at leat take some pain in your life.

Different types of damage, there is no comparisson. Getting punched in the face is a lot different to maiming yourself for life.
