Another thread made me think of doing this one, I feel it needs to be done. The man simply did not get the love he deserved. Chris Byrd is a great fighter, person and asset to boxing. Chris had the heart of a warrior. In an age of guys not wanting to fight other guys, you have to respect a man who gave up 3-6 inches in most of his fights, 25-40 lbs, and inches of reach. There have been other short heavies, Tyson, Tua, Haye is a small heavy as well, but what do all of those have in common? They all had the power to hurt big men, something Byrd did not. Yet he would take last minute fights against the tallest, most dominant fighters in recent HW history. You have to like him as a person as well. He's articulate and well spoken, he doesn't disrespect other fighters and its pleasant to watch interviews with him. You can tell by how close he is with his family (his corner was all family), where his values lie. Someone like that is a good ambassador for the sport. I felt that he deserved his own thread, one where we can discuss his better days, and remember the career of a good fighter, and a good guy. :happy:happy:happy
:good Undersized, underpowered, fighting guys like Tua, Ike, Vitali, Wlad? Takes beatings and keeps in there, good skills, well spoken? Chris Byrd is a fav of mine and while it was a bit heartbreaking how his career ended, hope he is living well right now and enjoying life. Nothing but respect for Byrd.
He didn't look too bad here. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDFelcPAe2s[/ame] Not terribly recent, but he's well past his prime here. Oh and, he fought Holy and Golota as well.
man chris byrd is a lame.he looked good in his holyfield fight and vitali fight. i have seen chris take to many ass whoopins, and i watched his fights but was never a fan of him at all. does anyone download any byrd fights to watch byrd.i bet he does not even have a youtube hl reel.at his very best he was just ok to me and at his wost well.when it rains it pours.
MY BUDDY USED TO LIKE CHRIS BYRD....I DIDNT HATE HIM BUT KINDA FOUND BYRD TO BE THE 90S VERSION OF JIMMY YOUNG...NO POWER /AWKWARD AND HARD TO HIT CLEANLY...........BUT IN HINDSIGHT I RESPECT CHRIS BYRD FOR BEING A VERY GOOD SOUTHPAW/WHO DIDNT TAKE A LOT OF PUNCHES IN HIS CAREER....AND NOT DUCKING ANYBODY AND FIGHTING MANY POWER PUNCHERS........AND BIG MEN....CHRIS BYRD IS NO *****.:good:good:good:good
Well, this is a better comment than your first. Chris Byrd was never meant to be a great HW though, but he did a hell of a good job with what he had to work with. Point of this thread wasn't to declare him an ATG, but appreciate him for what he was. His body movement is a thing of beauty IMO.
Vintage Chris Byrd [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE4sTNx1IdU[/ame] yeah when he wanted to not get hit he could slip like no other.he sould have been fighting at lhw to me.he had some skills in his best days.
