what chris byrd said about calzaghe not beating him is untrue. the actual tournament was in novemeber 1992 in italy. the actual tournament has been posted and debated on ESB many years ago. we had a round by round graph of every weight. calzaghe and byrd met in the final at 165. calzaghe won rsf 3. byrd turned pro 4 months later. calzaghe turned pro about 8 months later. the reason calzaghe was not chris byrd`s first round opponent in the olympic games is because the amatuer boxing association of wales refused to let calzaghe have enzo calzaghe in the corner and calzaghe was this refused an olympic chance. calzaghe was the amatuer champ of the uk in 1991/1992/1993 and was unbeaten as an amatuer at that time. that calzaghe stopped byrd is a good indication that calzaghe would have had a very good shot at being an olympic gold medalist in 1992 if allowed to enter.
Why? Ottke was an outstanding amateur? I swear, most of you people on here need to just stop with talking about amateur losses to other fighters, because you don't have the first idea the way the amateurs work. It's a completely different system, bordering on being a different sport.
From his book.... http://www.m*xboxing.com/news/Scully013108.asp Doesn't mean much though. Could be a false recollection.
Byrd-Diaconu could be really interesting if Byrd is at the same level at LHW as he was at HW when he fought Povetkin. Dawson-Byrd would be a mistmatch right now.
I don't understand why Chris would lie about this, it's well known & was brought up when the bbc did a promo for Joe after his Lacy win. Strange, I always thought him a man of integrity. Oh well perhaps Joe can claim his scalp a 2nd time now they're both @ LH. Would be a neat 'official' win for Joe's record
didnt you dump byrd a long time ago???? i could have sworn you were dissing on him and said you were done with him as a fan... maybe im wrong anyways... i wish chris the best of luck. Hes quite a warrior in my eyes and would love to see him own that division... i honestly just dont see how he can make it but whatever. the man is small for heavies, but imo, hes not a small man. but we will see. GO CHRIS.
Byrd couldn't do much damage to Joe @ LHW. Joe can take the best SMW punches and Byrd is a know counter puncher, not really known for his strength and if he did get trigger happy Joe is pretty good at negating sluggers, Also Joe is faster with better footwork and far better head movement. I honestly don't think Byrd could bring anything to the table that would trouble Joe.
