I did the same as you, I´d twisted the facts, just the other way around. It´s close between them, that´s my point. I´d pick Byrd because he was more willing to take risks and busier.

You are mixing up Young and Byrd in your last sentence though. :tong

Well I didn't twist the facts, the Golota fight was very controversal most people had Golota beating Byrd and the Oquendo fight, the nearest thing to a Young everyone bar the judges had it to Oquendo. Did you watch the Oquendo fight I posted?

If only the forum hadn't crashed and all the old posts had been lost, I'd post up links, I could try and find boxrec posts

77% of posters in this thread had Oquendo beating Byrd:

How did you score that 1, or didn't you watch it? I posted it on the other page if you want to watch it

Young should win on class and skills. probably a real close fight.

Most people don´t know how to score a fight. Had it close when I watched, been a while.

The Golota fight was as controversial as other fights where a fan fav lost a close one. ;)

    Doesn´t exist.

It´s not wrong to pick Young, it´s wrong that there is a difference in class and skill. And yeah, everybody who has another opinion than me is misguided. :deal

There is. Young basically fought them all and made a good account of himself. And he had a granite chin. I think young had greater speed. His defensive skills look more impressive to me.

So, did Byrd, just in a different era. Young is terribly overrated, like most of the 70s crowd, Norton, Shavers, Quarry. Just because they fought Ali. Young wasn´t faster and his defensive skills just look better because he didn´t take any risks and just wanted to spoil. Byrd took more risk and fought to win thus got hit more often.

It wasn't just that Ali was past his prime, he was out of boxing shape also but as many who saw the bout live thought, Young was robbed of the decision in my opinion. Norton was in prime shape and Young took him to the wire. You thought it wasn't that close, I and many others who saw it live think it was a toss up with a very sharp hitting Young. Lyle was a considerable heavyweight who's two stoppages of a highly touted Larry Middleton were solid top ten fare at the time. His ko of Shavers and clear leading on the scorecards against Ali were also thought highly of then if not now by some boxing laymen.

One differance between Young and Byrd was how much sharper Jimmy's punches were thrown and at their best how much more exact Young's footwork and blocking was.

Please read on, I exaggerated everything in this post, just like PP did in his. Young was good but on this forum the people act as if he was some unbeatable god - Quarry get´s the same treatment - just because he fought in the 70s. Everything that happened in his career is twisted as much in his favour as possible. When in reality he wasn´t better than Byrd. See, the post in which I picked a winner, I picked Byrd in a close one due to his higher workrate and because he took risks when he had too, Young didn´t.

Young had better footwork, Byrfd was better in the pocket though, better upperbody and headmovement.

Well not everyone to fight Ali is mad popular. That's a fact. Young also fought other top guys and looked great. I think Young definitely had better skills and speed. Byrd had to take more chances based on that exactly
