Moorer and its not even close. He had fast hands, awesome jab, and a sneaky straight left that could do more than enough to hurt Byrd. Also with Byrd's lack of heavyweight power I don't think Michael has anything to worry about. Moorer breaks him down in 9.
I think Byrd would win this. Moorer was not that mentally strong, I think Byrd would outmanouver and frustrate him.
While Moorer was fairly decent at heavyweight, he was also vulnerable.. In 1992, I saw him fight Everett Bigfoot Martin, and to this day, I'm not so sure who was more deserving of the decision.. Moorer did well when his opponents played right into his hands, but I have my doubts about Chris Byrd doing this... Chris was fast, skilled, well conditioned, and could take a decent shot. I don't think that he'd take any chances against Moorer, who preferred to mix it up..
I would say Moorer wins this one. I have tons of respect for Chris Byrd but I see Moorer winning this, Moorers suspect chin won't be a factor here and he won't need to be afraid of Byrds power, Byrd has speed but I don't see his punch hurting Moorer and because of that I see him walking Chris down and getting a stoppage late.
Moorer was a good technical fighter and being a southpaw didn't hurt, but I don't think his heart was in the heavyweight division. He lacked that spark that produced the fire from his lightheavy days and of course that was because his power at 175 didn't translate that well to the heavyweight division, and his sense of caution took over somewhat..as in his title winning fight with Holyfield, where he seemed to lack passion for the job at hand, even if he did win it IMO. Chris Byrd would have been a bit too slippery for the heavyweight version of Moorer..I think he would have had a higher set tempo and wouldn't have had to worry about Moorer being one of those bigger hitting guys who he had to be wary of. It would have gone the distance with relatively little real action, but Byrd would have had his way most of the time as he would have slipped, ducked, parried and blocked most of Moorer's sparse offense rather well over the long haul to earn a comfortable points win. I think his chin would have held up under the worst circumstances that Moorer could offer.
Who would have the edge in speed? Both guys are pretty fast, and one would naturally be inclined to think that Byrd is faster, but Moorer had very good hand speed when he chose to utilize it.
This is an interesting match up and probably would have been a slow paced boring affair. I don't think this ends in a ko. Byrd had a very good chin, if you could even land cleanly on him so I don't see Moorer knocking him out. And Byrd was a light hitter so I don't see him taking advantage of Moorer's soft chin. Being the fight is going the distance I would say that favors Byrd. Moorer simply isn't focused enough for three minutes of every round to beat Byrd. He can be lazy and passive and that would simply give Byrd plenty of oppurtunities to score points. Moorer would have the flashier moments but simply not enough of them. Byrd outslicks, out works, and out determines Moorer for a decision. I'd comfortably pick Byrd to beat Moorer.
THis might be the pace Moorer favors. He could win this fight. Close tough fight to call though. Wouldnt be suprised who won this one.
I take Moorer to win this. MM is the more effective puncher, his handspeed is comparable and is the more subtle defensively. I suspect Byrds more exagerated movement defensively and need for angles offensively hurt him against another southpaw. He will find MMs feet and hands in the "wrong" place
