Guys while I strongly agree that Byrd was a highly respectable if somewhat unexciting fighter at heavyweight , I really doubt Lennox Lewis ducked him or would have lost to him .. Lewis was the best super heavyweight of all time with the possible exception of Bowe's very short prime and that sort of mountain was too high a climb.

    Why?

Johnson was not a marquee opponent. Byrd had just beaten Holyfield to win the IBF belt. It only made sense to fight him.

Lewis knew that Byrd would given him issues. As did Roy Jones.

Lewis is an all-time great heavyweight.

But I still believe that Byrd was all wrong for him.

    That's fine.

I have my view. You have your view.

I still believe Byrd was all wrong... ...for exciting fights.

Max Kellerman called him one of the best pure boxers in the history of the sport.

    He was right as well.

    Kellerman also wrote this

"Pound-for-pound Byrd is a far, far better fighter than Wladimir, not to mention Lennox Lewis. Can you imagine either one of those guys beating a 6-7, 250-pound version of Holyfield?! The problem is they all compete in the same division when they really shouldn't.

It says here that Chris Byrd would beat any fighter in the world less than 225 pounds. And many who weigh much more. Time was that was enough for a fella to call himself champ. Oughta still be."

I think Lewis would have been a massive betting favorite. Don't you?

An overused truism does not really explain how Byrd could have beaten Lewis.

You should be thankful Byrd never faced Lewis because, again, it would have just exposed Byrd's limitations at the elite level.

Not only that... ...but, as a result of Lewis' generous humanity, Byrd was allowed to keep his health and face Holyfield and his zimmer frame instead. On that basis alone, he was able to accumulate a handful of nondescript and controversial wins/draw, until he ran into the fists of a Klitschko, again.

    All-in-all - Lewis did Byrd a favor.

There are a good few boxing commentators and scribes I listen to or read, with the thorough expectation that their words will carry some meaning and worth.

Max Kellerman isn't one of them.

    You're just going by record.

Head to head Lennox is too big and strong for Chris.

    Lewis by KO.

Chris Byrd and his nuthuggers are out in force on this thread. Who would have thought a post about a boring fighter that nobody wanted to see except knocked out on the canvas would have made it 7 pages. Im going to pop in my tape of Chris doing the electric boogaloo against Shaun George while looking like a teenage anorexia patient for another laugh... You know when Byrd was two years younger than the supposedly prime Holyfield he beat...

Chris Byrd was a non-factor in the Lewis era , but in the post Lewis era he was a world champ and the #1 rated HW in the world. Feat he achieved cos the era was so poor.

There's a reason why Klitschko fanboys speak so highly of him - they have no other choice. lmao!!
