Eubank, who beat Benn by ko, in one of the best middleweight fights for years.. Facing, Tommy Hearns, he off the 3 round war with Hagler? Eubank the underdog again here but showing mettle and a serious chin. Against the stunning power of the Hit man?
I think Hearns would get it done with the right discipline, but this is a very tough fight for Hearns, I understand why you thought of it, Eubank is not getting knocked out, and there is a very short window where he wouldn't even give a **** for Tommy's power. But even at his best, was he busy enough to run interference on a fighter like Hearns? To bust up a fighter like Hearns? I think he'd need the right punch at the right time and probably wouldn't duplicate it. I bet he would win a fight in a trilogy best for best, if that's not a contradiction in terms.
Eubank isn’t going anywhere. This might boil down to how hard Chris wants to go? If he wanted it bad enough, he could have his victory here and this is meant to be his best night. He’d be a very frightening proposition for the Hearns team indeed. I’ll take Eubank by stoppage, when? I’m not sure.
I think Hearns should win this unless he gets careless & gets tagged. He has the reach to keep Eubank on the end of his jab and has the power to keep Eubank "honest". I always thought that Eubank needed a guy to come to him to be truly effective so in my view Hearns' best bet would be to jab and move, keep turning Eubank to prevent him getting set. If Tommy did this I see him getting a 8-4, 9-3 type of decision. This is probably sacrilege to some, but I could also see a scenario where Hearns knocks Eubank out.
Eubank had a decent bit of power too. That makes me think that maybe, after some initial eating jabs and rights, he could hurt Tommy. The young, middle version of Eubank had more hunger, I really think he'd want to ko Hearns, and really try to in parts. I visualise Chris s face puffed up and his eye closed but chucking it all out of the way and going for it. He'd be a massive live underdog.
I think he'd really want it. None of this, ducking the big names stuff, he's in there to win it. He took the best shots from prime Benn, so I think he's good enough here.
It would have to be the Eubank before the Watson tragedy, Eubank after that lost his killer instinct. And even if he hurt Hearns wouldn't finish him based on that. If were talking about the very best version of Eubank, I think he has a chance of pulling off a late stoppage. I tend to go with the more proven fighter at Middleweight/Super Middleweight which is Eubank, Hearns had a few too many shaky performances at above 154 vs Barkley, Kinchen, Roldan, etc. Lastly as I said it would take the very best version of Eubank though, because sometimes Eubank was lazy in fights. And that version of Eubank easily gets out pointed by Hearns.
This would be a brilliant fight. Make no mistake about it, Yes Tommy could punch like a mule but Eubank isn't going anywhere. As well as the chin.... he had dog in him, good power and was savvy. I'd have to go with Hearns on points in a close fight but would not at all be surprised by a Eubank late stoppage.
Your right in that, Chris could be a lazy sod. But here, I don't think he'll have the chance. Not unless he was his head ripping off.
Tommy was literally as good as they come but Eubank was frightening at his very best, unbreakable chin and pulling out hellacious punches on his last legs etc. Tommy would have to be punch perfect and move more then ever. Interestingly Eubank faced Mark Breland as an amateur. It was Eubanks 11th fight and Breland’s 99th!
