Chris Eubank (1998) Vs James Toney (2003) at Cruiserweight

-Toney was widely considered to be elite before he faced Jones and rated around 6 p4p
-He was tried and tested in fights against top guys like R.Johnson, Nunn, McCallum I and McCallum II
-put on boxing clinics against Barkley and Littles
-He was coming off a disastrous loss to Jones
-Griffin was trained by the boxing wizard Eddie Futch

None of the above applies to Kessler, who has always been a predictable 1d fighter.

 

How people tend to forget who trained Griffin at he time ,one of boxings greatest strategists !

Of course not ! They just dismiss him and blame Toney for struggling with the likes of Griffin.

 

You will notice they never apply the same standard to Eubank.

If they followed Eubank's career back in the 90's then they would know that a lot of writers considered Eubank "washed up." He simply refused to train which is why he was constantly shading decisions against the likes of Close, Schommer, Thornton etc. At cw he is 0-2 which should tell you how good he was at that weight class.

 

Benn couldnt punch at 168lbs, the man could punch full stop, i think you should take a step back from the computer to clear your head as your'e clearly nonobjective on this subject. I have not seen anything to suggest that either mans chin is superior to the others. Both men have had underwhelming performances against opponents they would be expected to completely outclass. Id lean towards Toney in this fight due to his natural size advantage and he had a fair bit more left by the time he entered that division. Prime for Prime its a 50/50 fight, Toney could box beautifully at times but he must be one of the most overrated fighters on this forum.

 

Funny but I only hear about Toney's struggles ..It's yank this yanks that but hurt ..Seems they have selective memories ..

Toney would batter Eubank and have his face swelled up even more than they were in both Thompson fights, Toney was just too sharp at cruiser for a past it Eubank.

 

A fully motivated, in shape James Toney beats Eubank at any time any weight IMO. Toney is just better.

A pre- Jones 2 Griffin is one of the most underrated fighters ever.:yep

He was short and fought low, had good reflexes and was hard to time. He was also tough and had good pop in his punches.. He came at prime Jones with a perfect strategy. He was never the same after the re-match. But at his best, he was damn good.

He gets written off as a bum by a lot of people. Which makes me think they just were not watching boxing back then, because at the time when he was undefeated, beat James Toney, frustrated Roy enough to foul him and get the W, he was thought of as a very formidable LHW champ, and was ranked highly in the p4p rankings at the time of Jones 2.
