Didn't know anything about this until I read this story in the sun WALK into the Top Rank gym off the Las Vegas Strip and most days you will find Chris Eubank sweating through his tough training routine. Very few in that busy fight-factory know who he is. So he can get on with his skipping, bag and pad work without being bothered. But I’m told a number of fighters stopped their workouts last week to watch Eubank spar with Zab Judah, the flashy former world light-welter and welterweight champ. It was such an impressive session a smattering of applause broke out at the end. No, this is not a sensational story about Christopher Livingstone Eubank, the Brighton braggart, preparing for a comeback in his 40s. This tale concerns Eubank’s teenage son Chris Jnr and how he came to be serving his boxing apprenticeship 6,000 miles from home. Eubank, understandably, wasn’t overjoyed when his boy told him he wants to be a professional boxer. In fact, he did everything he could to try to talk him out of it. But the ambitious young man convinced him nothing was going to stop him following his father’s footsteps. Eubank relented but only when they agreed to do it his way. Chris Snr learned his trade in the 1980s in South Bronx, one of New York’s most deprived districts. He turned pro at 19 and had the first four of his 52 fights in Atlantic City. Eubank has always maintained it was his tough American upbringing that made him such a rugged and durable character. He believes without that exacting experience he would not have been able to survive his 24 world championship battles. Luxury Eubank’s lad, by comparison, has grown up in middle-class luxury in the Hove family mansion. And that’s why his dad emphasised, in the strongest terms, if Chris, 19, was hungry for success he must learn the hard way. Together they turned up at Mike McCallum’s doorstep in Vegas. The Jamaican-born McCallum was known as “The Bodysnatcher” when he held the world middleweight title because of his murderous body punching. Mike told me: “It was over a year ago when Chris arrived to ask me to train his son, who was only 17. “He made it clear he didn’t want me to do the boy any favours because we are friends. “I was extremely flattered he asked me out of all the other trainers in the world. “I also realised I was taking on a huge responsibility — looking after a lad whose parents were thousands of miles away. “But everything has worked out perfectly. Chris Jnr is a delight and has made amazing improvements. “I can assure you in a few years England is going to have another world champ named Eubank. “I go in the ring with him and he’s not only extremely skilful, he can also bang.” Chris Jnr has had a handful of amateur bouts but has already won the Nevada State Golden Gloves at super-middleweight — his father’s best weight. Eubank has entered the National Golden Gloves in Detroit but, even if he was to win that prestigious tournament, McCallum says he will not be turning pro for at least another 12 months. Eubank Snr lives in Dubai and calls to check on his talented offspring’s progress. I asked Mike if Jnr was a chip off the old block. He laughed and said: “No way — he’s very quiet and very polite.” I suppose that means if Chris does become a world champ, sadly, there will be no monocle, no jodhpurs and no gold-topped cane. Will be interesting to see how this pans out. Anyone know if Benn has a son?
You only have to look at his Myspace page to see what an utter **** he is. He is one British fighter I wont be supporting. Where is Nigel Benn Jr when you need him?
:yep That would be good fun, no doubt. I somehow doubt Nigel would let his son become a gangsta kid. He'd slap his senseless with his Bible before that happened.
I hope for his sake he has outgrown being a dick. His dad got into a lot of trouble young too, lets be honest its not uncommon for fighters to get in trouble young, is it? If he puts it behind him and grows up I wont hold it against him, but for now he's a dick.
One of my work friends went to the same school as Eubank jr and was his prefect. Gave him detention a couple of times for being surly. I will however follow his progress with interest.
a guy who glorifies that kind of behavior doesnt get the support from any decent human being, its shameful how kids whov had every oppertunity thrown at them could turn into such uncivilized bufoons.
so what if he got into trouble when he was a 16 year old? I used to get into fights when I was 16. So did 90% of the people on here too. We didn't stick it on Youtube, fair enough, but thats a generational thing. Its not exactly rare to find a professional boxer who's got into trouble on the streets before learning discipline and responsibility in the ring. How many former world champions have been in jail? Bernard Hopkins was an armed robber and low-life thug, you dont see threads hating him for that, but some kid gets in a fight and the vitriol is amazing! Its a total double-standed.
