"I watched the guy with the tattoo's (Mikkel Kessler) when I was in Las Vegas in April, and he's ordinary. "He can't fight going back or counter punch and Joe's game is to slug it out with his particularly fast hands. "If you consciously know range and angles you shouldn't have a problem with this guy (Kessler), either. "Anyway, Joe Calzaghe proves that age is just a number and that boxing is still alive and kicking, and deserves credit." This is the same thing legendary British boxer Jeff Thomas said many moons ago.
Nathan King: The Mountain Ash fighter sparred with Kessler until his troublesome left elbow brought him home early - he is now booked for surgery in two weeks' time - and reckons the unbeaten Dane brings plenty to the table. "He's really good," says Nathan. "He's a good technician, he can dig a bit and, although he doesn't look anything, he's very strong in the upper body." King, who has sparred umpteen rounds with Calzaghe over the years, is in an ideal position to compare the world's two best 12-stoners. "Kessler is stronger than Joe, but Joe does more, throws more punches and has faster hands," he says. "Kessler will make you work and if you miss he'll make you pay."
Sakio Bika: "Kessler is a level above Calzaghe," he insists. "Calzaghe actually can't hold a candle to Kessler. He is good, but he would never be able to win that fight."
Interesting... I was afraid Kessler would spend too much time trying to up his handspeed to match JCs..
Bika's trainer Angelo Hyder: "On paper you have to favour Kessler by the simple fact he is so big and strong,’’ Hyder said. "But Calzaghe has proved time and time again that when he needs to step up a gear and turn things around he can do it. He’s been world champ for 10 years and seen off a lot of guys who were supposed to be better than him. "Hardly anyone gave Calzaghe a chance against Lacy who was supposed to be too big and strong for Calzaghe like Kessler but Calzaghe gave him a boxing lesson and made him look like a fool.
Damn, that was too well grounded for Chris Eubank's realism level but whoever stated it first, it's all about that, range and angles, Kessler has nowhere the weapons Calzaghe controls at ease... But I can't see Joe backing Kessler up with pure slug tactics, just out-punch him and move out of there, actually nobody can do anything about that with Joe... The guy is really world class.
Its pretty odd that Lacy have said this, unless he actually means it, as opposed to some strategic cunning Baldrick plan.
If you were Lacy you might be a bit soar with Calzaghe, after all Joe has basically destroyed his career. But its not out of this world to think either will win the fight, after all both are world class and its going to be a close one.
