What do we make of the unusual one as far as his historical standing or just how good he was? I thought he had good boxing ability -hard single jab, fast double jab, neither telegraphed. The longest left jabs couldn't touch him -Watson, Malinga. Lateral movement was there, ring generalship. Not a good long puncher or combination puncher, but mastered lunging and flurrying to a degree. Good speed. Good power. Great chin. Great heart. A couple of v.good wins -Benn, G.Rocchigiani. (Benn defeated I.Barkley and G.McClellan, Rocchi looked to have beaten H.Maske and had beating of Dariusz.M.) Also beat M.Watson, defeater of Benn, on pnts and stoppage at '60 and '68. Malinga, Holmes -no problem for him. Gave Calzaghe his hardest fight w/out moving laterally. Thoughts?
Awesome when he got his feet or left hand working, covered every centimeter of the canvas against Benn I and landed hundreds and hundreds of jabs against Wharton. Also showed sharp counter skills in those fights, and his combinations flowed in those two fights. But if you backed off, like mediocrities Sherry, Schommer, Amaral, Essett, Moro etc did, he looked horrible - absolutely awful. Never has there been a sharper contrast in a fighter. Perhaps his most impressive performance was against Watson I for the accurate combinations against the crab defense and rubber neck against the smooth offense. Great showman and great character.
Apart from against Benn I and Wharton, he would throw this ridiculous long, loopy overhand right that always missed by a mile and I'm suprised it wasn't until his 36th fight that someone was tactically waiting for it to counter - Ray Close countering it well with 3-4 good short punches rat-a-tat-tat.
Young Eubank threw six-inch power punches [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUuMELkRMH8[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DDEyfF_QO0[/ame]
That was more of a right hook I reckon. He heightened it later, and threw like throwing a cricket ball.
I think the differences were, that because it actually landed, you did not have Eubank over balance and adjust accordingly, and Eubank ducked a bit lower than he did in future fights, throwing the punch.
