I didn't appreciate him till after his career, because I hated him because of how he acted, although he was an amazing fighter, brilliant technician with excellent power ( although held back in his later fights ) and heart of a lion!!

    two memories stick out:

Beating Benn and losing a close first fight to the Cat where I think he was finally appreciated.

His war with Benn,Defeat to Collins which was a great Irish sporting moment, his last two fight's with the much bigger Thompson where the public finally appreciated him, most of his career as a villan but went out a hero..

Watson Rematch, the whole country stopped and roared for Eubank to be buried but he wouldn't be denied

On the flipside, Hopkins didn't do much in the late 80s and early to mid 90s. Loss on his debut, then went missing, pitiful showing against weight-drained one-handed Jones, and punched out of the ring against Mercado.

Turned down fights like Toney in '92, and Julian Jackson and Reggie Johnson in '95. He actually said (through Butch Lewis - Hopkins was shy back then) he wanted to make 'some dough' first and these fights could happen later - they never did.

That's true. Has any ever peaked as late as Hopkins?
