Chris John is Average

I though John put on an excellent fight, he's a very skilled technician with a good stamina, movement and output. Not being a top elite puncher or a Jones type of super talent doesn't mean he's average. Boxing fans sometimes can be total assholes. John is exactly half way between an average and a top elite fighter. There's little love for flashy technicians with little power, but still, John is very good at what he does. On my card, he CLEARLY won the fight, outboxed John in most of the rounds, even the 'Juarez landed the more meaningful punches' doesn't work here, because he had like 2 clear rounds, but never landed flush shots multiple times to DESERVE winning a round where he got caught by 15 power shots and 20 jabs, which was the case all night.

He fought one of the best SFW fighters, a physically much stronger guy in his hometown, and for most parts, he made it look very easy. I was impressed. Yeah, he's average... and average top16-20 P4P-er if he keeps up the good work.

 

It is stated in during the fight. How John did not have any problem thinking that he would beat Rocky. If it would have been an elite fighter, he would have pulled out of the fight. Watch it again. I watch it a couple of tiimes today. Also, how Diaz after the end of the eighth round he told his trainer that Marquez is hitting too hard or hard. No offense to any posters, but I watch the fight and try to listen to what the corner is saying. It is hard with Lampley the drama queen yelling or getting excited.

 

Agreed. Also, btw, did he appear to have unusually long arms to anyone esle?? This was my first time getting to see him on TV.

A good fighter, lacks speed and power.

 

He's not average. Juarez is a solid solid fighter and put up a great performance in his home town. Chris John travelled halfway around the world and still outboxed him.

 

He hasn't fought much at this level or outside Indonesia. Atleast he is getting the experience.He can only improve from here on.

 

People tend to disregard that this is John's first fight in the US. First of all, the style you've all seen is not his usual original style, way too flashy. I mean, come on, you'd want to impress people on your first worldwide fight rather than just a boring decision win , wouldn't you? I think that's the main reason why he traded punches with Rocky a little too much, and his footwork seems a little too fancy. His style is actually a lot more efficient than the one he showed on that match, but, like I noted before, won't impress a lot of people outside of hardcore boxing fans (and won't sell much).

And please note the sickness he had from virus days before the match. I believe it took some speed and stamina out of him. I have seen some of his older fights (his Japan and Australian matches), and I know that he had better speed than that night in Houston. He didn't even mention the sickness at all after the fight, which made me think that this guy is all class....

On a side note, from recent interview, there's a big probability that he'd go for whoever win the aoh-larios fight for a WBA-WBC unification match.

 

I'd rather see him fight Juarez again. John could show how good he is to a US audience - he didn't do that last time - and if he made Juarez suffer yet another setback, a convicing defeat, then GBP wouldn't be pushing Juarez for titles any more. And they'd have a new top fighter in John.

 

Actually, Chris John is a very good boxer and has proven such.

In the last 20 years there have been maybe six fighters based on the other side of the world who have been able to win fights consistently in North America.

Chris John is attempting to join that list and make a name for himself in the process. Very difficult to do but at least give him a chance.

After Pacman, he's about the first established Asian champion who has attempted this feat so let's see how he goes.

If he can defend his title half a dozen times on US soil against respectable opposition he's a hell of a lot better than average.
