van Heerden is ducking and rising in a rapid elevator-on-the-fritz manner. Just up and down, no punching and not budging from his spot. Hatton watches perplexed and then shrugs and goes to the body. van Heerden grabs and lets go. Right jab up top by van Heerden, blocked. Left hook to the body by Hatton. van Heerden comes forward, grinning like a big creep. Why is he doing that? Big left hand by van Heerden. Hatton is pushed to the ropes, and curls his shoulder up by them to roll with van Heerden's follow-up left. Clinch. Break. Hatton puts in a 1-2-3, blocked with the hook ducked. van Heerden claps Hatton over the nape with a right hook. van Heerden walks Hatton to the ropes and scores the right jab. van Heerden digs a right hook to the body. The crowd is warming up, although Hatton doesn't seem hurt.

van Heerden is throwing guileless overhand right hooks and falling atop Hatton, who keeps his head burrowed and lands quick pairs to the body while he's got the space to do so. Lots of wrestling. The ref is keeping busy. Chopping right by Hatton, borderline rabbit punch as van Heerden ducks in low trying for a grab. 1-2 by van Heerden, over Hatton's head. Hatton puts his open palms on van Heerden's abdomen and pushes him back into range, denying the clinch. NICE 1-2 by Hatton. The challenger is gaining confidence, coming forward and jabbing. van Heerden squashes that by spinning Hatton into the ropes and flurrying.
