This is a big fight in the already STACKED UFC 205 fight card. Honestly it's an even fight to me. I think both are well rounded on their feet and on the ground, but I'm a Weidman fan so I'll be rooting for Chris!!
Romero historically gasses after about a round and a half. He's lucky if he has gas to last a full two rounds. Weidman who pre USADA drug testing policy, had a good gas tank, all of a sudden had a one round gas tank against Luke Rockhold. Weidman was either juicing, or struggling to rehydrate since they don't allow IV rehydration anymore. That being said, The early pick would be Romero by stoppage early on. If the fight goes past two rounds, Weidman would be the pick for the stoppage, as Romero gasses. It will be interesting to see if Weidman's tank is as bad as it was in the Rockhold fight. I doni't see a stoppage happening if they are both on empty.
Interesting analysis. How do you think Bisping would do vs either of these two given he has an amazing engine?
I don't like either match up for Bisping regardless of his cardio. I still kinda view him as an overachiever, and his showing against Hendo didn't change my impression. I don't like his lack of Cage IQ. Hendo is 105 years old, slow, with horrible cardio, and only one effective weapon at this point, that big right hand. Bisping was hit with that hammer too many times for my liking. Not sure he could avoid a more explosive, athletic guy like Romero for two whole rounds. I think Romero stops him inside of 2. I think Weidman uses his wrestling and grinds him into a stoppage as well. Maybe I'm being hard on Bisping, and just so use to P.E.D. enhanced performances that my bar is too high for him. We'll see though.
I gotta take Yoel, he is more explosive on the ground and standing up. great match up either way though!
He does gas, but he's got a few 3rd round KOs no? And even getting to the 3rd round with him is hell on earth Weidman was really badly affected by the IV ban as he's such a big cutter. He's one of the least likely drug cheats in the UFC IMO
This was probably the worst matchup possible for Weedman in the MW division. A guy he couldn't takedown or strike with.
