Depends on who you ask. There were quite a few supposed ALL KNOWING posters here who swore by him so I guess to them, he turned out to be a bust.
I was a big, big fan of the guy on siding with Amsterdam in that I thought he could do great things. He was in my top 5/6 P4P at one time. Then he fell to that surprising defeat against Darchinyan (surprising from my view anyway) and that seems to have ruined him. Shame, as he had great technical skills and was well on his way to establishing himself as one of the sports elites. Still, undisputed champion at super-fly so at least some good came of his career, probably just not as not as he could of potentially achieved.
Not sure why people say he's ruined. Cermeno has looked pretty damn good, and one of the losses to him is pretty widely acknowledged as a very questionable decision. I'm not sure exactly what people were expecting that he fell short of expectations. He nearly cleared out his weight class, which I don't think anyone expected. He's on the comeback trail now, so we'll see where he goes from here. I'd still like to see Mijares-Montiel eventially.
He is still an excellent technician and though I dont ever seem him getting to the lofty heights he once was I can see him bagging another title down the track. Cermano might just be all wrong for him and possibly he was to soon after the Darchinyan debacle. Nehomar just belted Valdez, who I rated as a very decent prospect..even with the bad loss to Hasegawa. I think Mijares just needs to rebuild and get some confidence back.
the guys lack of power behind those pitty-pat punches and his average speed is a limitation to his career. i always believe donaire would beat him
He's definitely fallen short of expectations, and given his damaged mentality I don't ever see him reaching the heights he seemed capable of. He looked to have all the talent, but it seems that childish arrogance that most of us mistook for confidence has been his downfall. I think he just lacks the mental strength to make the most of his abilities. Shame, but it happens. He's a prime example of why you should never hype up a fighter too soon, even though at the time of his fall he was a lot more accomplished than most of the current hype-jobs.
This was my take on Mijares also. But at 28, you would think that he still has something left. Apparently he retired...then unretired. I really respect his abilities and hope to see him against in some big bouts.
