I have a injury in my left elbow (I'm a southpaw). When I throw a fully extended straight left with speed my arm drops and my triceps swell due to an injury I sustained in my elbow over a year ago. The arm is fine for throwing all other punches. Ive been to numerous physios/specialists and they don't know what to do and say it may never go away. What would you do in this situation: Accept that without this punch you are at a serious disadvantage and consider not competing again? Would you come up with a style of fighting that works around the injury? I'm planning to go ahead with the second option, have 1 more fight and see how it goes. What areas/combos/ punches should I work on considering my handicap?
Make it an overhand left. Fight on the inside where you are close enough that you can throw a straight left but it wont be fully extended.
Work on your defense. Adapt your style. Use that left hand in a different manner; but without your primary straight punch you're going to be in a lot of trouble. Get really good at jabbing. Are you capable of boxing Orthodox at all?
Well you can see a doc and see what he or she can do for you to help. also try to take some time off boxing come back and see if its any better. or you can make your own style and work around throwing a straight. or take advil try to deal with the pain and throw em straights and tuff en up.
i would keep going to specialists and getting referals.... obviously there is something wrong, and for some trained professional to throw his hands up and say "i dunno what it is, so too bad just live with it" is complete bs. They should be refering you to the best guys in the country. Some medical professionals love that ****, finding out a problem that no one else has the skill too. If the problem has been diagnosed though and there is nothing they can do, well thats different... In the meantime, don't think of your self as handycapped, you gotta think like your handy-capable!!! lol seriously though, dont give up, just keep trying other ways to fight with the injury.
Yeah, see if 'House' is available, he'd be all over that like a fat kid on a smarty. I kind of have the same problem lately however I dont think its chronic but I know your pain in a way. I cant really throw my right fully right now or else my elbow will sting for a while after. However its not so much a problem because most of my fighting is done with my left and when I do throw a right its as a counter usually and I dont miss often that way so it doesnt affect me all that much. Maybe you could try using it as a counter punch and get good at that, this way you dont miss as often and extend to the point that it hurts.
lol ... i dont know if your being serious or taking the ****?? I have 2 personal friends that are doctors, and they enjoy dealing with these sorts of issues. If you go to someone who doesn't know what it is, they generally refer you to someone better than them (not just say tough titties - live with it), and then if they cant figure it out well then you just keep going up the chain so to speak...
Damn that sounds like a pain in the ass. I would work hard into seeing a specialist. Has it properly been properly rebabed? A lot of elbow injuries can be helped. If they can't do anything adapt your style, being a southpaw is fairly unconventional anyway. Another thing that might work is doing the movement very slowly to see what works, i wouldn't rule out the straight left completely it might just need some readjustment. Do you want to further injure something you will have to live with in your old age? Might need to make a decision on that aswell.
Problem is I've always been and outside fighter before. Im 6'4 with decent reach. I'm thinking fighting on the inside is my obvious option. In orthodox stance the same happens with with a quick jab. So orthodox is out. Although I do have a good right straight. Should I look into jabbing southpaw, quick stance change and then throw the straight in orthodox? An MRI showed the elbow has bone marrow swelling at the tricep insertion point, this is causing ulnar nerve problems. One specialist said that rest is the only thing that would heal it, and said it could take 6months to 2years+. That's of complete rest, no weights, no boxing no use of the left arm at all. I rested for 6months ( a horrible six months, lost 5kgs and had a higher bf% at the end of it) and there was no difference after it all in the injury. After that I said f*ck it I'm not going to turn to mush resting for 2years and got back to it. I know that's a possibility. But at least id look back saying I didn't give up, If I did, maybe that would be worse than having the injury itself.
Well, if you're unwilling to fight orthodox and you have no straight left you're gonna need to double and triple-up the jab a LOT more and work on 1-1-1-6, 1-1-8, etc.
