Looks like the movie is focusing on his Vida Loca which is in fact more interesting than his boxing career. Dude was a party animal. A legend in NJ...where legends are rare.
I never understood how Wepner was able to successfully sue Stallone and get a large wad of cash from him. Admittedly I was never a avid follower of his career fights but I must have missed the ones against Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago.
Stallone has said repeatedly over the years that Wepner's fight with Ali was his inspiration for Rocky (and in turn, the numerous sequels, plus a Broadway play); the suit was based on the idea that he (Stallone) benefited hugely by associating himself with Wepner, without Wepner receiving any sort of commensurate compensation. The defense was that Wepner called himself the "real-life Rocky" and probably benefited as well ... it was probably a matter of degree; when you consider the Rocky franchise has grossed over $1 billion, Wepner apparently felt he was due more compensation than notoriety at the local watering hole.
Wepner wishes he was Rocky Balboa or had his fictional film life.Apart from getting a undeserved title shot against Ali, like Rocky did against Apollo, there is absolutely no similarities that I can see between the two in their life or careers. I don't remember anyone after seeing that film, commented that 'That Rocky totally reminds me of Chuck Wepner'. Now if Stallone had named his character Chuckie Balboa ....
Apollo was supposed to be a kind of Ali, clubber a cross between frazier and foreman!?? Don't ask me how, I haven't a clue. And drago.. Well I'd have said klitschko or golata but they hadn't even turned professional then so maybe sly had a crystal ball!
