hmmm.... 15 posts so far on this thread, and unless I've missed it, not one person has mentioned Foreman only having 3 professional fights when he fought Wepner.

Muhammad Ali was the most intimidating heavyweight ever.. But I do agree that Liston was a beast..but Foreman was not an imitation of Sonny, they did not fight too similar.

Ali also said Sonny hit harder than Foreman.

I think Sonny may have the edge in hitting power, but this clip is from a press conference before the Foreman fight.

Ali described Sonny as his most intimidating opponent in later years, but i've never heard him say that Liston hit harder.

But it's arguable that Liston never even caught him clean, whilst Foreman really cracked him.

It's fair to say, but on the other hand, Liston had lost torque by the Wepner fight. Compare the footage to something like Bethea or Whitehurst and that's pretty clear.

Ah..but Muhammad was intimidating in a different way to Liston and Foreman. The latter two were sheer powerful menace, whereas Ali would make a opponent look daft. Not the same.

Liston was around 40 years old when he fought Wepner in 1970. He was way over the hill by that point. Wepner STILL thought he hit harder than a young george foreman.

Muhammad said that out of all his opponents,he found Liston the scariest, and Foreman the most powerful. Joe Frazier the toughest, and Floyd Patterson the most skilful boxer.

I've long claimed there is nothing between them. Sonny was a huge puncher.

That makes sense. Maybe aside from Patterson being the most skilful boxer.

    Your avatar, wtf.

I guess I would have figured it the other way but it's far from the most shocking revelation

Now, if he'd said Ali or someone hit him harder than George...

Also, I'm wary of anything Chuck "Stallone owes me money for a movie that isn't even directly based on me" Wepner says. Don't much like the guy.

I completely agree that at 37 years of age, and being in the last fight of his career, that Liston was shot, and much of his power gone.... No argument here... But common... He was still a fully matured man with the experience of being a former world champion and having his techniques far more honed than a 20 year old guy with only 3 pro fights... All this, and it still took Liston a cut stoppage after 10 rounds to beat a man that a green Foreman beat in 3.... I'm not calling Wepner a liar when he says that Liston hit him harder, but some of this stuff needs to be put into perspective..

Oddly, it's unlikely that either man hit as hard as he was able.

But I don't know how much power Foreman would develop past 20. Maybe a bit through technical improvment and such.

Foreman had more power. Liston was a more accurate puncher. That's the difference.
