Say George Chuvalo and Oscar Bonavena turned pro in 1933. How would they do in that era? Would they do better than in the 60s and 70s? How would Bonavena deal with Galento? How would Chuvalo deal with Max Baer? Would they make the top 10? Are they potential champions?
Nothing changes, they weren't good enough to beat Louis and with 1933 debut, they would have to. I like Bonavena, but we had many fighters of his caliber in the 1930s.
That makes a world of difference, similar to Holmes and rest of the gang. Now if Oscar and George were fighting for a belt, other than Louis s? Well who knows?
My knowledge of the contenders of this era is only skin deep, so I'll only comment on the few I've seen. I know the lineal champs enough to feel comfortable talking about them, but I get stuck on most of the contenders. Carnera is awful for them. Sure, Chuvalo probably deserved to beat Terrell, but make Terrell bigger, stronger, quicker and more mobile, then give him a better jab. Honestly, both could beat Baer. Although If he shows up as he did for Carnera or Schmeling, then neither see the end. Chuvalo gets stopped due to accumulation and taking too many clean shots, and Baer has enough power to stop Bonavena outright. Both beat Braddock. Provided Sharkey shows up ready, they both lose UDs to him. Although their styles could give him a few issues early. Schmeling picks them apart. He could very well stop Bonavena. Louis kicks the **** outta both and stops the pair of them. I tend to think of most well above guys like Galento, Buddy, Uzcudun & Farr, maybe a few other guys too but like I said, I don't really know the mid tier guys very well.
