It wasn't a great performance by Ali. Chuvalo's pressure and Ali's inability to keep him off (due to Chuvalo's chin), made it difficult for Ali. Though, he never looked in any danger of losing the fight. He totally dominated. He just got hit more than usual.
Ali last fight was against Patterson in Nov 65. Chuvalo fought Terrell that same month and then he fought twice more before facing Ali in Dec and Jan 66. That kept him in good fighting shape.
after the first fight in 1966 in toronto, chuvalo went dancing with his wife while ali went to the hospital.ali passed blood for sometime after taking those body shots
He must have scared the **** out of anyone else out dancing that night, because his face was all puffed up after that fight. When Chuvalo compared the young Ali to the older one he said that Ali had been just a little faster with a little more endurance in the first fight. I've watched most of both fights and to me they look pretty similar. Ali probably does clinch more in the second fight and if Chuvalo said he was somewhat slower as well I believe him. Chuvalo took quite a lot of punishement in both fights, though, but landed some good punches himself.
It's on the film. You can ever read Ali's lips saying, "Harder, harder, harder!" when he's holding Chuvalo and Chuvalo's hitting him.
Anyway, Chuvalo did better in the first fight. He connected more and made the rounds close even though IMO he didn't win more than two rounds.:good
