Georges supposed defense and chin are vastly overrated for the simple fact that as soon as he started catching he stopped fighting to win. Just like David Tua. These guys started getting tagged and then did nothing. Tua always tried to throw a lucky a hail mary punch (or a dirty after the bell shot) to save his bacon but George just plodded forward behind his guard giving the impression of aggression but he wasnt really doing much. Joe Louis was fast, had perfect combinations, and could hit like a truck. I dont see Chuvalo finishing this fight. People can nitpick and say maybe hes stopped on his feet like against Frazier and Foreman (he would have gone down against Foreman under a less compassionate ref and he quit against Frazier or he would have been knocked out there too) but either way a stoppage is a stoppage. It means you cant continue and he would be able to continue against Louis. Someone like Louis or a prime Tyson who have extremely fast hands and great combination punching to go along with ridiculous power are going to get Chuvalo out of there.
There is no man who ever lived who could absorb the trip-hammer blows of a prime Joe Louis once he had you dazed. To have a prayers chance to avoid being kod by the prime Louis you had to have the ability to scoot away for 15 rounds as a Billy Conn , a Bob Pastor did the first time, but a George Chuvalo, as brave a fighter who ever lived would go the way that a bullish Paolino Uzcudun went when a right hand went through his mouthpiece, knocking out some front teeth and leaving Uzcudun unconscious...Max Baer had as good a concrete chin as any heavyweight in history absorbed such triple left hooks, right crosses from the young Louis that Baer fearing for his life quit while still conscious stating, " if the public wants to see an execution, they will have to pay me more than a few bucks". Louis batters the brave Chuvalo into submission in 4 rounds... The Louis of the Max Baer fight was very probably the greatest all around sublime puncher who ever lived...
I agree that Louis wins by a decision however my thoughts were just how physically strong Chuvalo was the issues he had were with movers even Frazier moved like a ball of fire in his prime he didn't dance he was perpetual motion bobbing and weaving etc.... Louis on the other hand was not much of a mover on his feet or his upper body his movement was subtle and deliberate leaving the prime Louis with the task of dealing with Chuvalos strength and toughness for all 15 rds. Styles make fights and this would be interesting.
Chuvalo would go all defensive once he gets tagged by Louis and may try to survive, but Louis would stop him by the ref taking mercy on George in 7 or 8 rounds of a brutal pounding.
I have the utmost admiration for George Chuvalo the career he had and his toughness. However I can't believe anyone's could take any human punchbag no matter how good a chin to go the distance with Joe Louis.
