Hmmm... Chuvalo: A Man who was as strong as an Ox. Very determined. Slightly below average Boxing skills, speed, with less then an average Punch for a Heavy. Shavers: Strong. Paralyzing Right hand. Average Boxing skills, speed. In this case, quicker then Chuvalo. Could be lax in his training. Which led to stamina problems. Im gonna go out on a limb and call this one for Chuvalo by TKO late. Due to Shavers running out of Gas. At any rate a win for Chuvalo.

If Earnie didn't stop him on the ropes before round 5, George outlasts him to a 14 or 15 round stoppage with the ref saving Earnie from further punishment.

I thought Chuvalo hit pretty hard. But did not have good speed, flat footed.

Chuvalo was a very solid puncher .. his issue was his foot speed .. hand speed not great either .. if he hit you it hurt for sure ..

Chuvalo most likely wins this. Shavers gassed against men who pressed the action against him and forced him to blow his load early while having the staying power to survive his onslaughts ( see Ron Lyle fight. ) Its not entirely out of the question that Earnie could land something big that could turn the tides in his favor though. Chuvalo was stopped against the two biggest punchers he ever faced which were prospecting versions of Foreman and Frazier. The more mature and conservative Shavers who fought Larry Holmes ( not the one who fought Lyle or Quarry ) might have bide his time and ultimately created some opportunities to land his sunday shots. But for all practical purposes, Chuvalo needs to be favored.

Nobody in the annals of Boxing history gets more unjustified love in ESB's Classic forum than Shavers regularly does. Chuvalo simply doesn't lose to a guy with the stamina and chin of Earnie Shavers, no matter how many fans get blinded by a few highlight reel KO's of journeymen and has-beens.

Chuvalo had the kind of chin that could keep him in this long enough for Earnie to gas out and get stopped. Chuvalo was slow and easy to hit but he was never taken out by one punch and he went to the body well. Shavers could hit and probably hurt anyone but his record at finishing guys is not so great. Chuvalo late stop, Earnie out of gas

    Yep.

And the best thing Chuvalo did as far as punching is concerned is throw body shots. And Earnie isn't going to like that and he won't respond well after about 10 rounds.

If memory serves, they were going to fight. And Bonavena was going to fight Earnie as well and pulled out. I think a loss to either and DKP doesn't get behind him either. And the late 70's would have been back on the club circuit, instead of being a player.

Like him or not, Earnie Shavers came very close to being heavyweight champion of the world on two occasions. Personally, I think he won the first of those occasions. Earnie proved against Ali that he could pace himself and go the distance. Chuvalo is way easier to hit that Ali or Holmes. I consider Chuvalo a journeyman and Shavers a contender, and I will pick the contender in this fight.

Earnie the better overall fighter, but Chuvalo wins the fight. Earnie was a teriffic puncher with both hands. Biggest misconception about Shavers was he could only punch with his right hand. Shavers nearly tore Lyle's head off with a single left hook, that unfortunately for Shavers, landed just before the bell. It was Shavers left that started the destruction of Norton. Anyway the only way Shavers beats Chuvalo would be for Earnie to break the bones in Chuvalo's face like Frazier did.

Shavers stops him early, Chuvalo out on his feet. Similar to foreman fight. Chuvalo can't take shavers right hand for too long

I like Shavers, but I'm taking Chuvalo who has to much chin, body punching and stamina. Some fighters are just bad style matchups. Kind of like Mercer vs Morrison.

Chuvalo outlasts him to take a split decision.

The best Earnie could outlast him for a decision over ten .. I just don't see George falling apart early .. maybe Shavers hurts him early enough to get his respect and beats him technically … again, only the best version of Shavers ..

A lot would depend on the referee. Perhaps a young, green, Ernie would gas-out but George (as much as I like him) doesn't have ANY defining career wins, save the Quarry anomaly.
Yet another example of WHEN they would have fought.
    10 years different in age!
    Chuvalo is, simply, Chuvalo.
A green Ernie would have gassed out.
A prime Ernie would have bided his time a bit and landed some big shots. Quarry didn't hit half as hard as Shavers and had George a bloody mess. pvp IMO Ernie lands major wood on George and hurts him (maybe the blood would come). And then gives him more of same. If Chuvalo avoids the blood and big shots and gets his body work going maybe he's the winner.
I just can't see these pvp guys going deep; Shavers lands BIG, early and often, and hurts and cuts George, in route to a stoppage at some point; if not, then George late if he's able to survive his cuts, blood, and ploddiness.
