So did Ringo, although he sounded like he was breathing helium. George is much easier to listen to. (Can you imagine Bonavena providing ringside commentary for a television audience?)
Chuvalo expected a head to head war, and Ringo smartly screwed him up. Generalship is supposedly a factor in scoring, and I felt Bonavena had a clear edge there, surprising George with his movement. (He also retreated well behind his jab late in the Frazier rematch. He had some versatility Chuvalo lacked. George was definitely the HW Gibraltar of his era though.)

Boxing illustrated may have said that Chuvalo won, but 3 judges saw it differently. (one had it a draw).

I'm not convinced that George won until I see a full copy. The rounds that I did see were Bonavena outboxing him and outmaneuvering him.

I disagree with Boxing Illustrated's take on the fight. I've watched the video of it and I think that like Gene Fullmer, Bonavena had a "style B", a sort of reverse gear "boxer" style that however crude, like Fullmer, he was very effective with it vs the straight ahead, unimaginitive Chuvalo. The harder punches were thrown by Oscar and one of those trips to the canvas by George seemed to be a legitimite kd. He flummoxed George with that style and clearly won the decision. Aggresion in of itself isn't going to butter the biscuit, if you know what I mean, on the part of Chuvalo. Oscar deserved the decision without a doubt. He had a bit more versatility, as has been noted in an earlier post and that was the difference here.

Boxing Illustrated was also a Canadian publication. In fact, in the early to mid '70s BI was still rating George like # 4 or 5 in the heavy's even though at one point he hadn't fought in a year or so.

Was it really? I'm not home now, but when I get time tonight I'll have to look up my collection. For some reason I recall as a 17 year old looking at the 1st page and saying, "Oh, that's why they rate him so high."

    73 wins 64 knockouts !!!!!
    No big punch ???
Did you ever see any of those 64 knockouts.
Chuvalo could punch -- especially his left hook.

Jake, this was the very first BI that I bought in '73. Scroll down to the table of contents page and it surely indicates it was a Canadian publication. But there again, I would not be surprised that it did have NY ties or that it was once or maybe even later published in the States. I was just always puzzled why they had George rated so high every month even when he was inactive. Man, I mis those top 5o monthly ratings.
