That's just one claim though, you're acting as if he's typically overrated for an overblown reputation rather than his work and skills in the ring.

Also, what two Bantamweights would you have ahead of him? Olivares is the only legitimate choice IMO, and his inconsistency is what gives Jofre the slight edge IMO.

Actually, I've seen a number of sportswriters/historians rank Jofre up there in the top 5-10 P4P. It isn't just Cuocco. I believe he even mentions a few of those other writers in his article. There's been a sizable faction giving him a big push in recent years.

You could probably make equal cases for Jofre, Olivares, Zarate, Manny Ortiz, Panama Al Brown, maybe old-timers like Pete Herman or George Dixon being up there. Personally, I think bantam is the hardest weight class of all to make a surefire top 5. I even started a thread not too long back asking people to name their top bantams, and there was a lot of divergent opinions. Personally, I put Jofre above Olivares and Zarate, but some of the others it's harder to tell.

George Dixon is one of the most difficult fighters to rank, period. There are times when I think he belongs up there with the likes of Fitz, Ross, Gans, Leonard, Walcott, etc.

I have him at no. 4 behind Robinson (1), Duran (2) and Armstrong (3) with Sweet Pea at 5.

Jofre was a quality fighter and was one of the most well rounded boxers I've seen but no2 is too high I have him in my top 25 but thats probably the highest. He is ranked no1 at bantamweight by many and is great head to head but his resume is not strong enough for a top 10 spot.

    Nah.

Naming guys that definitely could be labelled better boxers would be no fun though. I bet you couldn't name as many as are actually above him on your average ATG list.

Great body-puncher, could box and punch with both hands. Definately an ATG, but certainly not top 2 material.

I usually have Jofre jockeying with a few others like Ross and Ali for the #10 spot. It's tough to fault him.

    * He was a master boxer-puncher. Adaptable, highly skilled, with one punch power in both hands, who won his first 50 bouts and his last 25.

    * Solid competition -Ernesto Miranda, Eloy Sanchez and Jose Bedel, stopping undefeated Bernardo Carabello and Johnny Caldwell.

    * The losses to Harada were split decision losses that took place in Japan. Fighting Harada may be the greatest boxer to come out of Japan. Incidentally, Barney Ross was the ref in the first bout.

    * Jofre's stepping up to Featherweight and taking a title at 37 rivals Duran- Barkley in my book. He then KOd Vicente Saldivar, a fellow hall of famer 5 months later. This is the stuff of all-time greatness.

    * Iron jaw. Never stopped. 78 fights.
    .........................

PS/ Jofre is great. The closer someone has him to the top 10, the more you can assume that they are not just a casual fan (<cough> "Ali is #1"). I'd say that number 2 is pushing it unless one is judging inordinately based on level of skills (which a few ESB posters are guilty of even if they confuse "talent" with "skill". <Cough>, "Roy Jones")....

PSS/I'm not big on recommending a non-carnivorous diet for a fighter. But he was easily the greatest of the plant-eaters. Sh*t, if he drank the blood of bulls like Robinson or at least chewed the flesh, he may have given early Duran himself hell and been even greater...
