Probably one of the more overlooked fights where the underdog not only beats the champion but almost completely shuts him out. Clarence “Bones” Adams puts on a great boxing clinic against Nestor Garza by using lateral movement, good counters, and dropping him twice to win the WBA Super Bantamweight title. He would only defend the title twice until losing it to Paulie Ayala. Adams was a severely under appreciated fighter back then with a nice boxing style. Also gave a prime Orlando Canizales some trouble at the age of 18. This content is protected
Bones was awesome. A consummate professional style. Garza himself is also underrated. I highly recommend watching his war with Kozo Ishii for anyone who hasn't seen it.
My partner in the boxing game was Garza's trainer. During the introductions he is standing behind Garza's left shoulder, with his hands clasped in front of him. Garza losing to Bones was a pretty big upset, especially after the serious shoulder injuries Bones had suffered. I asked my friend what he thought went wrong, if they had a bad camp. He said no, that the camp was great, all of them that were there had a great time. Unfortunately, Nestor wasn't able to join them until the last 8 or 10 days because, up until then, nobody knew where he was or how to find him. He showed up having been on a binge, lost a bunch of weight and fought. If you know, or knew, Nestor like he was even when I met him, you would find that story to be a likely possibility. I understand that he is in a much better place now. Not to take anything away from Bones. He had overcome severe injuries to his shoulder and, if memory serves, his jaw was broken when he fought Canizales. He fought a good fight and I was glad to seem him reach the top, having been a fan since he was 15.
Garza was also in a great scrap against Enrique Sanchez as well. His fight against Kozo Ishii was far more brutal and entertaining than Johnny Tapia vs Paulie Ayala 1 which took place that same year.
