I'll never forget that. Banks was the star of the American team, Tuur was completely unkown. 1988 was a great Olympics.
Banks had like 300 plus amateur fights. He seemed to pass his prime before he even turned pro. Banks was the biggest name on the US team because of his long successful ameteur career which included a lot of International Competition. However, according to many, Ed Hopson should have had Banks's spot on the Olympic team, if I remember correctly. There was some controversy over their box-off to make the team. You don't see many one shot KOs like that with guys wearing head gear. I think it was a combination of Turr having good power and Banks having a mediocre chin. It was cracked several times in the pros, as well.
Tuur has been one of the best boxers we had in the last 25 years. His career ended because he beat up his wife and was sent to jail. After that he completely lost it and now he's refusing to speak Dutch. It's a shame, that one of the best boxers in our little country won't deserve any credit for his great career.
Yeah, if I recall what I read correctly, Hopson, a high school junior at the time, initially upset Banks but then lost some controversial decisions to him in the boxoff rounds. He and his people alleged biased officiating and Banks admitted that he fought dirty (and got away with it).
wow. I guess he is the poster child for having too many amateur fights. His pro career was basically a total bust.
