C t, you should have left this old thread amoulding in the grave....To say this about probably the most lethal puncher in history when he was in his prime Joe Louis, is preposterous...To deride Joe Louis, who at the old age of 36 years, losing to the prime great Ezzard Charles as proof of his dumb assertion that "Louis was not a great fighter", deserves no other comment... :patsch

Didn't have d time 2 read all of it right now , but Charles did not beat Louis .
Maybe he out rubbed him maybe he landed a few occasional slaps without getting KOd in re2rn , but he did not beat Louis .
Louis was not a great fighter though , even if he was d #1 heavyweight of his own (lousy) era .
But then he avoided Lee Q Murray and lost d 1st time 2 Cream , and enjoyed a wrongly called foul over Buddy Baer d 1st time , and was d giant in most of his fights , except those against hulking clueless opponents .
So Louis does not really deserve d recognition of d best HW of his own era , since it might have been Murray just as well , but Louis' management did not let that happen .

Well Rocky Marciano retire, he was fighting over the era of the super bigger fighters like Ali and Patterson didnt really come until Marciano retire or something. So one Marciano retire, a new breed of heavyweights took over the next day or something like that.

Heavyweights learned the skills developed by welterweights and lightweights in the 1930s and 1940s, like footwork, good boxing and speed.

    ??????

"it might have been Murray just as well"

Perhaps the great Murray shouldn't have lost to O'Dell Riley and Johnny Flynn in his prime, which cost him his recognition as the greatest.

I think Cross Trainer has a sense of humour.

Yeah but because he and his brother agreed they'd never fight, we'll never know just how great he was.

It's even better because it's an actual quote, more or less. I'm beginning to regret that his threads died off. What was his Marciano thread called, again?

Also, we should be thankful that those enterprising 30's and 40's welterweights discovered speed.
