Vincent Pettway signed a program for me at a fight card in Baltimore... had a few beers with Baltimore club fighter Jake The Snake Smith. Wouldnt call them classic though

I had that experience at Ali's old gym in Venice, Cal. Shavers wasn't tryin' ta show how macho he was, just a simple handshake. Had I not dug my toes in, hedda lifted me off the floor.

In the late spring of 1975, after his fight with Ali, Chuck Wepner made a personal appearance in my home town. As I shook his hand, I told him "I want to shake the hand that put Muhammad down." He replied "Next time it'll be OUT!" I also got his autograph and he introduced me to his wife - he was a very personable guy. Also, at the same appearance was a boxer who fought out of Plainfield, NJ in the 30s - Joe "Butch" Lynch. Although never a champion, he did fight a number of champions and top contenders in his career. He told me that he and Joe Louis had been good friends, and that he had known Jack Johnson. I asked him what Jack Johnson was like and he replied "... when Louis was champion Johnson went around looking for a white hope."

Ok Burt you've got me covered. I met Paul Ferrari when I was 9 and Lester Ellis a couple of years back outside a cinema. Maybe they're not exactly classic boxers but one was a world champ and the other gave an ATG a good tussle and both were very good fighters and I'm proud to have met them both.
