if only henry were 6 years younger, what a fight that could have been!

 

Luis Firpo faces Jack McAuliffe II - it's 1923 and the the Yankee Stadium in New York hosts Firpo's 6th fight since coming to America - it would be his 6th successive big KO win on American soil - 5 further KO's later (including one of former champ Jess Willard) and Firpo would be in with the ferocious Jack Dempsey for the heavyweight title and another incredible chapter would be written into the annals of heavyweight history

J,ah, memory's ! I was as a youngster sitting with my dad in the side balcony at old MSG, 50st and 8th Ave,NY. A s I have posted, Robinson won a very one-sided decision over his idol Henry Armstrong. I had the impression that Robinson at nearly 6ft. in height ,would have beat any version of Armstrong. Style, style, style. Cheers...

J,this picture must have been taken in the early 1940s.I remember seeing
young Archie Moore walking into Stillman's gym with a few young chicks, dressed to the nines, wearing a camel-haired overcoat. He was introduced to Eddie Anderson, who played Rochester, on Jack Benny's radio program.
Ole Archie sure knew how to dress those days...

Yeah that pic was from the early 40's (Archie's early 20's - he may have even passed for a middleweight back then?)

he's a (slightly) more recent pic of the master - looking no less cool for the extra years
