No comparison T. Lest we forget Harry Greb with ONE EYE and 12-14 pounds LIGHTER than Gene Tunney, beat the LH Tunney several times
until age and Tunney morphing into a heavyweight, became too much for Greb , creaky with about 250 bouts under his belt to overcome...
Akin to you saying that Joey Maxim at 175 ,who stopped the MW Ray Robinson was an "equal or better"...No one, but no one, did things that the 160 pound Pittsburgh Windmill did, whipping great LHs, and HWs in his
300 bout career and aside from his start as a prelim boy when he was stopped by the bigger more experienced Joe Chip, went the NEXT 270 or so bouts never being kod AGAIN, against everyone, everywhere, and anytime.
And think of this T, fighting the last five years with the sight of only ONE eye...So to answer to your question Tunney P4P was NOT Greb's equal...

In the ability to fight and beat everyone of his weight and heavier guys
over a long career, I have after Greb of course. In no order :
Henry Armstrong - a human dynamo with a low heartrate.
Ray Robinson - greatest all around fighter that ever lived.
Fitz- hardest puncher for his size of all who flattened heavyweights.
Sam Langford- short, squat and powerful who was a great fighter from
welterweight to heavyweight...

Heavyweights have their own category...

Burt, what about Sam Langford fighting Greb at middleweight? would Greb win?

 

How Tunney survived the last part of their first fight is still a total mystery but P4P I don't see many being equal to a prime Harry Greb. Even though in a pure tactical sense, Tunney might be ahead of any fighters.
