along the lines of the photo thread.

this was a great night for irish boxing....some of these videos from the time period look very well produced and a joy to watch.
this is the beauty of youtube, i never take it for granted...i used to collect old boxing video tapes years ago and it would cost a fortune just to see a small fraction of what we can see on youtube and the like...
    anyhoo...rinty...

    Baer v Foord - Harringay, England 1937

    (copied text)

The newspapers reported "It was a sockfest from the beginning" with Max determined to show his English audience he was a worthy opponent, after his own loss to Tommy Farr.

Max floored Foord twice in the second round for counts of nine "with the same roundhouse rights that carried him to the world title." "In the ninth, Maxie let go one more punch that nearly lifted the South African from his feet. Foord went down and was counted out." The fight ended with Foord face down and bleeding on the canvas. "The crowd applauded Baer for fully 10 minutes" afterwards.

“If ever a man came near to meeting his death in the ring,” wrote Peter Wilson of The Daily Mirror, “Foord did at the hands of Max Baer, who seemed to turn, in a twinkling, from a strutting, grimacing playboy to a snarling wild beast.”

As soon as the fight was stopped, Baer rushed across the ring and knelt by his stricken opponent. He cradled Foord in his arms like a baby. “I have rarely seen a man more genuinely moved in the ring,” noted Peter Wilson at ringside. Perhaps Baer saw Frankie Campbell {who died after their fight in 1930} in the ring that night; or, perhaps, with the incredible similarities Baer shared with Foord, he saw himself.

Foord shocked the boxing public by confessing that he had suffered from amnesia after his last few bouts. “Looking back,” Foord wrote in a syndicated article, “I know it was Max Baer who started the trouble. He was by far the hardest hitter I ever met. Dimly I remember him pillowing my head on his lap after he had knocked me down for the last time. He hit me on the chin with punches I felt for days, but I stuck it.”

In 1942, Foord played a prank on his wife, Phyllis, that ended tragically. After sneaking up on her with a pistol and pretending to be a desperado, Foord twirled the gun Old West style and accidentally shot himself in the face. He was 29 years old when he died.

a bit unsure about posting this one because everyones seen this fight....but, this version of the highlights is an exceptionally well edited video i think...normally i dont like some of the music used on some boxing videos on youtube, it spoils them, but in this case i think it really enhances it...as well as that it is absolutely crystal clear video...one of my favourite boxing videos on youtube at the moment this...
edited superbly and presented like an epic scene from a film...had the laptop hooked up to the telly and speakers this evening showing my boy, and it looks fantastic on a big screen too..

another one of those great fights from the garden...although quarry was beaten handily enough in the end by frazier, for a couple of rounds he give him a great argument, so much so that the ring magazine made it their 'fight of the year 1969'...
the video as you can see here is superb, really well recorded, makes for fantastic viewing..

the only time lamotta was floored...although in fairness he was on the run-in of his career here...it was a sort of half-slip, half-shove type knockdown too...
la motta looked like he loved showing he could take punches...at the end he defended himself with one hand...holding tightly on to the top rope with the other..

what a weird fight this was.
max baer was no bum, and i was surprised, before i seen this, to read that this was billed as 'the battle of the bums'..
but, by god, did they fight like bums...the two of them look awful...
insulting each other during the fight, baer messing about, no skillful boxing, like two old men fighting in a pub at night...

    crazy fight..

Dougie, It is a pity and a mystery not to see on film possibly the greatest
and certainly toughest fighter on record...to have 300 fights against so
many larger Hall of Famers., whipping them time and again, going by
railroad from town to town almost weekly, is mind boggling. To top it
all, he fought a good part of his later career, with ONE EYE. Yes it
is a shame Dougie there is no film of Greb in action...

burt...while i have you...what do you make of that baer v galento fight ?...would love to hear what you made of it.
best i seen baer on film was against schmelling, but even then he had weird footwork, looked like he was doing everything wrong from the waist down.
