was this the night they robbed floyd patterson of one of his greatest achievements??....to become the first man ever to win a heavyweight world title 3 times !! in the 14th patterson dropped ellis with a body shot and then fell forward with him, it wasnt called a knockdown...patterson, ever the gent, got up and bent forward to help his, fairly beaten-looking by that stage, opponent up... patterson was nearing his mid-thirties here and this was a great effort from him... i ask it as a question because i am aware of how commentry can sway how you are seeing a fight {or does with me as much as i try not to let it}, and howard cosell was calling this a clear patterson victory a while before the end, then you have ellis looking beat up near the end and having a broken nose for most of the fight...it wasnt all patterson though. for anyone looking at this, what did you think ?? For me that was a robbery. Clear victory for Floyd. The Swedish ref was the only scorer of the fight (which took place in Sweden). Funny, since Floyd is very popular here.
used to love mcauleys fights, i got into many a heated debate when i would say he deserved as much credit as mcguigan over here. that whole fight was on youtube but got taken off...another example of why we should be saving some of this stuff from youtube, it may not always be there once it goes up. this is just highlights, you've probably already seen this...and while i like the song, i wish they hadnt put this to music... I've got both fights on VHS but my whole collection is in boxes in my garage and half the labels are ineligble as they have been in there nearly 20 years. Many Thanks, it's nice to just see the highlights. Maybe my memory has played tricks on me but I seem to recall there were more knockdowns than what was showed in that highlight. McCauley was a great little warrior who came up against a great champion.
Hope memory's serving me correctly aswell - but can I remember a McCauley-Baby Jake Matlala fight being one of the most absorbing and arduous battles I've ever seen?? McCauley was a tough tough honest fighter - liked him a lot
Floyd Patterson vs George Chuvalo - Fight of the Year 1965 some nice footage of introductions of ali, marciano, tunney, braddock, joe louis and walcott before the fight started... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmIE5oDGtak[/ame]
Bokaj, actually the ref was an American named Harold Valan. It was reported at the time that Ellis and Valan were seeing having breakfast in the days leading up to the fight. I don't know if that was innocent or if it really happened, but if it did, shame on Valan even if it was innocent. Even the appearance of an impropriety can send waves through the wires. Incidentally, Valan was also known for another atrocious decision. The Ernie Terrell-Chuck Wepner fight. I have the ring mag (I think it was my very 1st Ring I ever bought) which the report detailed the slicing that Terrell gave Chuck and how Ring scored the fight 9-3 for Ernie, but Valan gave it to Wepner 7-5. Strange how things work out. Without that bad decision, Wepner would never have gotten into the top ten and would never have been hand-picked for Ali in his first defense and a young Sly Stallone attending the fight would never have gotten the idea for 'Rocky'.
