Vanboxingfan.....if memory serves, Duran held him in his arms and said "You will always be my champion,." amazing.
This story was also revealed in one of documentaries about Duran. Truly classic moment, and after that Duran was hero in PR too.
That's correct.excatly in those words. And SRL was right, that man was a demon and possesed in thre ring. Tyson when young studied Duran, and wanted to he like him.Easy to understand why. I have Duran inside top 5 ATG.pound for pound i only give SRR chance to win more than 5/10 against Duran.prime to prime.man got truly unique skills, and was the meanest and ruthless boxer ever.
"Let's go look for some hores!" Pretty sure he said somthing like that at some point. Maybe to pacquiao, dunno :conf
Don't know but he must be getting a few bucks off the movie about him, which is coming out next year. I know he gave away lots of his money but I think he's one of the few fighters who legendary status is actually increasing over time. While he was in his prime he was often overshadowed by some guy named Ali.
jonze86...yeah, i agree. easily have him within the top 5 ATG. Just absolutely possessed inside the ring. loved to watch the ferocity and the relentless attack style.
Apparently, In Hatton's book, Ricky was queuing up to come through passport control, and Duran grabbed him and sneaked him out of the airport by going through a fence (the story plays out similar to this) and the people at the desk are shouting at Duran to "come back!" and he turns around and gives them the finger! The man is the definition of legend. He's had some life, that's for sure.
I recall a story Michael Carbajal shared about fighting his pro debut on Duran vs Barkley undercard. All the boxers were sitting around talking before the weigh-in and Carbajal mentioned to Duran that he was his idol...Duran without missing a beat jumps out of his chair, hoists Carbajal over his head and said something similar to "Whoever owns this little boy, your child has been lost"...then Duran told Carbajal's training staff that he required a cash reward for finding and keeping the lil pipsqueak save and secure from all this fighters. Carbajal said he realized how much Duran respected him after the fight when Duran "stole" Carbajal's gloves and told Bob Arum that someone in the audience walked off with them. Duran presented the gloves to Carbajal at a post fight dinner.
