Good few years ago I worked a bit of security work. The lad on the same shift as me was an absolute hard-core classic Boxing fan. He used to fetch in old dvds and ring mags from years back. Spent most of the shifts either reading or watching the old fights lol.
A friend in work new i liked boxing and saw me watching Sugar Ray Leonard. i think he was just trying to start a conversation around it, but i had to change the subject quickly when he said to me "i would of loved to see Sugar Ray Leonard fight Mike Tyson"
I agree. Foreman's jab was beastly and he definitely knew how to use it. I think the version around 91 would be a good bet to beat Roland. He could well have a point of Foreman wasn't quite so good. But he wasn't, he was a ****in beast. LaStarza could certainly do it to say, Sam Peter. And he was probably right that LaStarza was a bad style for Foreman, but that's a long way away from actually beating him.
My best fried who doesn’t really know anything about the game keeps on extolling the virtues of Max Baer mainly because he was his Dad’s favourite fighter. He’s seen film of a couple of Max’s fights when he’s stopped his opponents I think the Carnera and Schmeling fights, and he’s virtually concluded that Ali apart he’s the best ever. I did have to tell him that Max was demolished in 4 rounds by Joe Louis and I’m not quite sure if he actually believes me!
There was a street fighter over here back in the 70’s, a middleweight before getting locked up for stuff. On release he fought Lastarza and beat him, lastarza was past it, but I thought he’d of got the better of this fella (Roy Shaw)... I’d say it was rigged
A few years ago I worked with a guy who loved to talk boxing, I miss him. He had a tendency to rate warriors as the greatest like Gatti, Chacon types just because that was what he enjoyed. But it was still cool to talk boxing with someone at work. my sons and nephew are more into mma even though I tried to raise them right. Sadly no one I know loves boxing
even most casuals in the states don’t know fury, wilder or Joshua. My brother asked me if I was going to watch the mike Tyson fight on the night of fury wilder I lol
Im in the UK and we have a lot of casuals who only know these 2 fighters. Its frustrating because i would have some great conversations with guys who know about the sport
Luckily I do have a lot of close friends who are classic boxing fans. I live in a part of town with a lot of Mexicans so it’s also common to come across people of a certain age that you can discuss historical boxing with. It’s pretty common for me and my friends to have some beers and watch classic fights.
Everyone around me ends up being at least a little knowledgeable about boxing, mostly because I have very little interest in talking about anything else. If I am not talking about work stuff at work, I'm at the gym or on the phone talking boxing.
That's the joy of LA - huge Mexican population and Mexicans are generally huge boxing fans. I became good friends with a Mexican guy who loved boxing but that was unusual because we were both living in Oxford in England so the chances of a Mexican guy bumping into a British guy who just happened to know something about Mexican boxing were very slim - blew his mind that I knew who Salvador Sanchez was.
