I don't know if this topic has been done before but I have not seen threads on it. I can tell from the "What fight did you watch, score thread" who still watches current fights. I had this topic on my mind as I have slowed down in following the sport as closely as I used to and all the fighters I grew up idolizing have since retired. I have a few guys that I still like and root for but no one I get as pumped up for like I used to. I sort of am more of a sport fan than fighter fan if that makes sense.

I was curious where the rest of you guys fall, do you still watch current boxing? If not when and why did you stop? When was the peak for you, what changed?

I followed the sport weekly til 2016. Today I do watch the major fights (Crawford, Canelo, I watched the last week Davin Haney vs Prograis, but not like before when every weekend I watched 2 cards.

Other things happened in life, it got hard to follow, they don´t make it easy... it´s tough to follow boxing for several reasons, on the other hand it is easy to follow football/soccer for example (or in your case if you´re american the NFL or the NBA I imagine), so a lot of things consume my time today, and I can´t get out of my way to watch every card that matters, search for them and all...

The peak, for me, was around 2003-2012.

I find the sport colorless today, I´m not gonna get into how good fighters today are etc, but I find the fights "salt free" if you know what I mean, like eating a steak without salt is what I meant.

When I was younger and boxing was on the major networks and ESPN in the 80's and 90's I used to follow it much more closely. Nowadays I mainly follow the heavyweight division. I used to really like HBO boxing, I hope SHOWTIME doesn't stop broadcasting it.

I still follow it and watch fights every weekend. Even though the sport isn't really a mainstream sport anymore, there are some absolute killers in the game today that I look forward to discussing on the classic forum in the years to come.

For me I just like to watch boxing, I rarely root for a fighter, it's not like football, I'm a Washington fan and they suck again this year. There are a few guys I've liked over the years, Qawi, BHOP, Lewis. I always rooted against Sugar Ray Leonard, although now I appreciate him a lot more.

Aww ****, like another poster said it's not a mainstream sport and it makes it harder to follow.

I doubt, if anyone with so much interest in boxing that they have found their way to the Classic Forum, would ever completely stop following the sport!

I haven't stopped researching, I never will, in fact I uncovered a little gem just last night, but yes, don't follow the lie anymore, too much hype, pish and true fights necessary NEVER happen, yet your supposed to believe so & so is the best, Yeah Right.

    Boxing is DEAD!!!

I still follow it but from a distance. I’m not the most knowledgeable person to ask on current fighters these days.

The way the sport is nowadays I rarely bother watching. Maybe a couple of fights a year if I think those are interesting enough.
Actually I pretty much prefer to invest my time watching 70s - 90s fights in YT.
Why I would waste my time and my money watching some mediocre alphabet soup "championship" bout when YT is full of great fights for free.

I'm more excited about seeing a fighters name on here I have never heard of and looking up their fights, rewatching fights I haven't seen in a while, or watching a fighter during a point in their career that I didn't spend much time on

I would say the last fight(s) that actually captivated me was the Holyfield Bowe trilogy

I'll usually watch a Canelo highlight reel the day after, always waiting to see Fury get KO'd as I'm sure many are lol

The march of time means all boxers - and their fights - fall into the "classic" category eventually. That means Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will one day be in the same niche as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, regardless of what we think of any of them.

So it's the boxing politics not the quality of fighters that keeps you away? That's what I hear from most and would say that boxing politics have always been the problem with sport even in the "glory years". Fight fans have delt with crooked promoters, fixed fights, corrupt officials and color lines being drawn over the years but at the end of the day, every era has amazing fights/fighters.
