Don't get me wrong, he's not a pretty fighter by any stretch, certainly not at this stage. Damn hard to beat tho by the looks.

Didn't Calzaghe knockout 20 of his first 21 opponents?

Obviously not world class guys, but...

I actually thought Calzaghe didn't slap that much against Jones. It's true he flurried quite a few times, but that doesn't make one a slapper, or Leonard and Jones himself would be slappers as well.

Jones' face was damaged pretty bad, in fact he suffered a cut for the first time in 50 or so fights. I'll take those slaps to the bank any day. :good

Calzaghe is one of those guys who looks semi-beatable, but in reality fights very unorthodox and is extremely good at adapting to his opponent's style. Emmanuel Steward noticed this also. I think he compares a bit to Marciano in that sense: looks beatable from ringside, but everyone who steps in the ring with him realizes how hard to beat he really is.

His hand problems began as an amateur I beleive. In Britian the ref's are usually quick to stop the fight if a fighter is getting hit without hitting back.

I wanted Jones to win, because I think Calzaghe's a ****-sack. Of course, I was pretty sure Calzaghe would win (I was hoping that Joe would either age over night or Jones would be able to pull off a miraculous performance, or both), but I was hoping for a closer fight than we got. Jones is horribly shot and Calzaghe's still a ****.

I have to say it was a sad sight seeing Jones get beat and humiliated like that. And the huge cut didn't help either. But i like that he didn't seem to care and went on with business and actually came out aggressively on his toes during the 8th, 9th and later. The first half was a very good fight, after that it became lopsided but i was never bored. And after all the humiliation he did, i guess it was rightful for him to meet his match in ego.

    What do you think John?

I totally agree. It was all fine for years when Jones was the one dishing it out, but now the boot is on the other foot we see aggressive sympathy and every angle in the book as to why Jones never did anything quite like what he received

Calz is not known for going around hot dogging. Jones is. I agree with you giving Jones his due, he kept talking all the way thru it till the end and didn't lay down.

The bottom line is he took his hiding and come uppance far far better than his fans did.

We had an incredible number of people picking Jones, given how most knew he was realistically shot years ago. Many of the same people have now turned on Calz accusing him of taking easy fights and picking on corpses :patsch

I've always been a Jones fan, and his effort sure didn't make me think any less of him. I knew he was shot and he did if anything better than i thought he would. Tho he was still beaten easily of course. Good on him.

The undeniable thing about Jones, and i do not care what anyone says, is that he never ever had the technical skills (Hopkins, Moore etc) or plain will and endurance (Ali) to keep fighting effectively after the natural speed, assets and reflexes were gone.

I have to admit, i expected bedlam in General after the Jones loss but i am shocked at the way so many have taken his defeat. Many of these were picking him.

Without being shallow it is obvious Calz being a non American has hit many of these guys where it really seems to hurt. It's just silly.

    Simple.

Roy won the first 3 rounds whilst not throwing a punch ala Willie Pep.

He scored round 5 a 10-0 round for Roy on artistic merit.

He also deducted 2 points from Tarver in the 11th for an illegal punch to Roy's chin.Roy's round 10-8.

Plus Tarver would've went down in the twelfth except for the ropes holding him up and the bell ringing early, that's a 10-7 round for Roy right there.

A more realistic question would be how could you NOT score it for Roy.:huh
